Good news for those who do their mobile browsing using Chrome. Google has announced the release of Chrome 59 for Android, which introduces some helpful new features and adds a few tweaks, including faster loading times.

Chrome version 59.0.3071.92, which you can download here if it hasn’t already been pushed out to your device, uses an updated V8 JavaScript engine that helps web pages load quicker. Google says the speeds are up to 20 percent faster compared to previous versions of its mobile browser. And as the improved V8 engine is more efficient, it uses less memory, too.

In April, Google said the JavaScript page loading improvements were due to the development of a new metric that better quantifies real-world usage.

Chrome 59 also adds support for animated PNGs, known as APNGs. While they appear similar to GIFs, the format is of a slightly higher quality in that it supports 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency. Mozilla has supported it since Firefox 3, and Apple introduced APNGs in iMessages with iOS 10.

The release contains standard performance and stability improvements, as well as a new image capture API that gives web pages more control over a device’s camera (only after the user grants permission, of course). Instead of just being able to take pictures, the new API allows pages to switch between detected cameras, use the flash, adjust the zoom, and focus the image.

Finally, Chrome 59 for Android contains some minor security improvements. Pages that are embedded using iFrames, for example, are no longer allowed to send notifications.

Somehow every new Chrome release is supposed to: 1) use less RAM; and, 2) Be faster.

Somehow that never ends up being the case. I guess the hardware they are talking about is constantly changing? But, still, chrome manages to always be a resource hog. Not such a big deal on a decent desktop. It's a huge deal on mediocre laptops and smartphones.

but to do all the things that Chrome does, it needs the resources to use, otherwise, it would be like 'Edge'. Love Chrome :)

*shrugs* chrome doesnt constantly reload on 3GB of RAM phones like it used to, and it is far faster then any other browser on the device.

it's only issue is the lack of an adblocker.

If you have a newer Samsung phone you can install an app called "ADHELL" which does a good job of removing most ads. Not as good as ad block plus on other browsers because it leaves a blank white space where the ad would've been sometimes.

I couldn't find version 59 in the play store link and when I tried the direct download provided I got an "unable to install. Package corrupted" message.

My wife just bought an S8. She used Chrome for about 3 days before giving up on it and switching to Opera.

I'm a long time Chrome user (on everything). Before getting my Axon 7, I could never use it on my phone. It was flat out sluggish (and that was running a pretty powerful Zenfone 2 -- and before that a just-released S3). Even with the Axon, the generic browser with the phone is snappier.

100% agree. Chrome is the best out there. When my wife started using it she was surprised there was a Task Manager and I tried to explain the structural differences between Chrome and alternatives. There is this misconception that it is poorly coded. It's just much more demanding due to what they are trying to do.
