Computer runnig slow

I have a windos xp that is running way to slow. It takes for ever to start a program. What can I do?

scanned for Spyware? See if too many programs are loading at boot, disable unwanted ones from MS config. Check HDD fragmentation and free space, if its loaded with junk or badly fragged, time for disk cleanup and defrag to speed up things. Add more RAM?
