  1. I've been looking for a good Data Recovery Application, and have found many positive reviews on multiple products. Which one do you recommend?

There are alot of Data recovery programs out there. Ontrack's easy recovery professional, Stellar Phoenix, and the creme de la creme, which is Winteranls, ERD Commander, there are also some very good freeware data recovery apps. like BartPE, while the basic programs is composed of entirely freeware programs, the system utilizes plugins for commercial apps, like those listed above and others.

R-Studio isn't free, but it's worth every penny. If you really care then you should consider.
Try Knoppix LiveCD. It does have NTFS drivers, antivirus scanner can be configured and it comes with a bunch of great utilities:

Here is one of the sample sites where I've read some reviews, just so you can see what I'm seeing. Also, is there an economical and effective way to buy hardware which will let me troubleshoot SCSI and SATA drives as well? Currently I am just placing the HD in question as a slave in my current system, and I know the day will come when I have to fix a SCSI drive and will be SOL.
