Dell 1525 does not boot

my dell 1525 laptop with vista boots to the windows recovery screen. no matter which mode i select, (safe, etc) after loading some registry drivers, the screen just shows the mouse pointer on a dark blank screen.

Maybe failed backlight/inverter or failed hard drive? How old? How much memory. Tell us the Service Tag from the label on the bottom.

i sometimes get to the "resuming windows" screen but always end up with a cursor on a blank screen

I presume this is the memory -- 3GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
