Do I wait for new GPUs to come out?

Roughly a year and a half since the GTX 10x0 series launched, rumoured that the 11x0 is coming early next year. I have a 970 now, shall I just wait until its out til I upgrade?

IMHO, it depends on what you want to do with your GPU.

I usually upgrade equipment when:
- some new/more is required by software I want to run (like the 2GB VRAM required by Fallout 4)
- something breaks
- drivers are no longer provided ( like my venerable HP Scanjet )

Others may have more aggressive needs (competition play, quick reflex games, etc), but for me 40-50 fps is enough. A current upgrade gives you 20-25% improvement. Uncertain what next gen out in the mists might do.

So I am going from a 970 to either a 1080 or 1080 ti, but I hear Volta is biiiig improvements over Pascal, I would love a stable 60 at highest res possible, even on demanding games like Rise of the Tomb Raider. I hear even the 1080 Ti can't achieve solid 60 on those demanding games....

New version of the PCIe slot may help make the decision, but that would require a system upgrade. Good luck with the search.

Just go ahead and buy the game it doesn't ask that much for good cpu specs.
I don't know why some of you people are scared of newer games requiring new overpowerd hardware to do simple things.

That game wants 2gb video ram to itself so grab a video card that has atleast 6gb and good amount of cuda cores to do other stuff.

Find a really good gtx 1080 on sale during the thanksgiving/christmas holiday season most are hitting 600 bucks for a real good one.

Generally a decently capable GPU will last you a few years I have a GTX780 here that still plays all my games fine I picked up an EVGA Black Edition GTX1080ti today for $800AUS the cards an absolute BEAST it will smash games for years to come. I had a Maxwell Titan X before this card even that card was still smashing my games at ultra 1440p no problem I didn't really need to upgrade but I got it cheap.

I don't think 4k Max settings will be achievable in every game ever tbh the more intensive games get the more powerful graphics cards we need its a constant catch up game.

I already have the game but I have to make comprimises on a lot of the graphics to achieve steady 60.

You mind telling me what comprimises by chance, are you aiming for ultra high settings ?
If you had it at maxium settings I really don't see why it should lag, if you have any background apps running.
That might be a problem I could grab a torrent of that game and test it out wednesday.
Record 5 minutes of tomb raider and upload it to youtube and let us see it.

Man what games are you playing? What is your monitor - resolution, refresh rate, gsync/freesync?

It all depends on how patient you are. If you have patience and can wait for ~6 months or so then yes you might want to wait for Volta. Otherwise, upgrade now to a 1070 and save up your money to upgrade in 2 to 3 years time. By then, there should be a GPU that can handle 4k at ultra at a steady 60fps. To me if you're going to go big, you gotta buy the card as it releases so you can get your money's worth. For example, the 1080Ti released earlier this year. Had you bought it then, you would've had a year and then some to enjoy it. It's always risky business when buying hardware late into the life cycle because there's always a chance that it will become extremely under powered which was the case with Maxwell to Pascal jump. 980Tis performing on par or worse than a 1070.

I faced a similar decision last week. Currently on a GTX780 and have heard that Volta may be out in mid-2018.
I decided that Volta could get delayed as Nvidia are currently mostly dominating the market with the 10 series so why release the 11 series so soon? Also, miners may snap up the new cards and drive costs up and out of our reach. And it may take a while for partners to release cheaper boards with custom cooling.
So I bought a 1070Ti on sale and hope to overclock it.
