I have a Gateway with two sticks of PC 800 (64 MB each). I bought a stick of 128. When I install just the stick of 128, I get three long beeps at startup. Dows this memory need to be installed in pairs, or is this a sign of a bad stick?

Yes Rambus RDRAM needs to be installed in pairs (except on the old Pentium III chipset the i820).

Dual channal ram must be installed in matched pairs, but boards that accept Dual channel will function with unmatched ram installed. You should check with the manufacturer to find out which slots to populate given the configuration you want to use.
