Good Afternoon; I'm about to install a DVR on a motorola sbv6220 cable modem. Do i need a router to do port fowarding or would it be possible to point at the WAN IP and port? I have done this with DSL but I'm not sure if I need a router if this is a cable modem.

thanks you all.

As soon as the number of devices attached to the Modem {be it DSL, Cable, or carrier-pigeon}
you need a NAT device to allow the ISP connection to be shared with the LAN side devices.

IE: you need a router.

without the router it wont know where port ex: 8080 is? correct?
I was trying to save money but I think there is no way out.

Yes, you port forward (8080) to the lan address of the device.

For that to work, the device needs a static ip address
(dhcp might assign a different one depending upon which devices were seen first)
