Exporting photos from google pictures

I was unaware google photos uses gmail storage also so I need to know how to get the photos out of there & onto my pc? I thought I found a solution but no.

I found this https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/photos/BdokaoruO58 but this "Ace - Select the first photo, then hold shift and scroll down to the last photo to select all and then click download. Sorry I wasn't clear on the first post.", don't work

So I guess it is not possible.
