Flushing the DNS in XP

I recently had some trouble and tried flushing the DNS , but got this message at the command prompt:

Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution

Any ideas why this could be happening?

check services.msc and see if the DNS client service running properly, or then check the properties box in the specific services.

Correct! must have client service AUTO and started. I ran into this on a friend's system too.
