Hmm, ok I have a problem.
I have got Soldier of Fortune 2, Medal of Honour Allied Assault Hitman 2 Silent assasin And i can't get them to work properly.
With Mohaa and sof i play for a while and the game locks up and i need to do a hard reset to restart windows XP professional.
I have the latest drivers and all.

If you need any more information please ask and you'll have it.

I really want my new System to work properly

For sys-specs check Profile

Have you previously had games working ok on this PC or is this a newly built PC that is having this problem?

Welcome To TechSpot forums

It is a new system and games like Vice city seam to work fine ( it only crashed once cause i was trying to insert a Ducati in stead of the other fast bike and i did a bad job...) The weird thing is that Hitman want's to send Microsoft a report and since i have no internet on my own PC (this is my dad's) I can't do that, but i can still use Windows. The sof and mohaa crashes are lock ups.
Another thing. I've got some divx Movies and while i was watching one my PC crashed just like in sof and mohaa. I don't know if that had the same cause but it was well weird....

Could it be that Sof and Mohaa are crashing the same because they have the same engine (q3)..

Any help is welcome...

I've had lockup problems before with games using OpenGL or directX. The first thing I would do is to remove the detonator drivers for your graphics card (possibly also using a cleanup tool such as detonator destroyer or other from www.guru3d.com). Then try installing the driver again or another version of the driver. Make sure your using the Microsoft WHQL marked ones from www.nvidia.com. Let us know if you still have lockups after that.

i do

I have the latest drivers from Nvidia.com and the drivers i used b4 were the ones that came with the card and nothing changed at all...

I'd like to install Win 98se but i have it ntfs formated and i dunno how to get it fat32 again...

so...

I'm not sure what your problem might be. I'm sure that the combination of video card and motherboard should be ok. Since some games work I would guess this would be a software/driver issues rather than a hardware issue. I would check for information at the amdmb forums as they have a specific Asus section.

You do have your motherboard Via chipset drivers installed? The Via Hyperions? you can get the latest ones here.

will do,

Is it possible to run win98se on my computer again or is that really difficult ?

I'd like to do that if it would solve my problems...

Yeah, you can use the fdisk utility to format the disk to fat32. Then the 98 install will recognise the disk ok.

:)

That is a great last resort but i've begun to like XP so i'll try the other stuff 1st...

I'm experiencing the same lock-up issue

My profile contains my PC specs, but I am indeed having this same issue. It's driving me nuts. At random times, for no reason whatsoever, the game will freeze-up my entire PC. My laptop will ping my pc and get no response, etc etc so my system is completely and totally dead.

I run Windows XP Home Edition and have been for a very long time now.

I have played many other games on this PC with very few or no problems.

Anyways here's the details.
When watching DivX anime episodes I experience random lock-ups which cause my entire pc to freeze up and requires a cold reboot to fix.
The same thing happens at random times in Soldier of Fortune II. I was playing in 1280x1024 resolution at first, full settings. I have since then dropped the settings lower, and it still does it. The incidents of freezing occur much less often in my anime watching than it does in this game (in this game it happens anywhere from 5 minutes into it to 20 minutes into it, tops)

One time i put the game into windowed mode, disabled all other applications running, and put up the TAsk Manager off to the side. I monitored my CPU usage and PF/Memory usage.

I noticed my CPU usage never went beyond 55% and my PF usage was no more than 340 even in intense situations. My memory was nowhere near full, nor was my CPU usage. My system froze, including the task manager. everything froze. it was frozen at 54% CPU usage and 339MB PF.. which was only about 3 out of the 8 bars representing memory in task manager.

I realize it's not because my system is being overloaded, because otherwise the cpu usage and memory usage bars woulda been full right?

Anyways, I've played many other games including UT2003, SoF1, Final Fantasy XI since December, Need for Speed Underground, etc etc... never got a single lockup with any of those games (except for FFXI when targeting mining points). Whenever I did get freezes in these games, I was able to alt-tab out and close the program without needing to reboot. SoF2 and DivX animes are a different story, my entire system is compromised (Which is BS since XP runs programs in speerate processes and isn't supposed to lose the entire system to an application crash!)

I'm running the latest ATI Catalyst drivers for my operating system and video card.

Anyone have any suggestions please? This is driving me nuts.

 Hello & Welcome to TechSpot

What was the last change you did to the system before it stopped working? (Both software and hardware changes)

You have used ad-aware and Spybot S&D to clean your system? (Use both, as they neither of them catches everything by themselves)

Have you tried the solution that was mentioned earlier in this thread of flashing your BIOS?
(I think your motherboard supports AsusUpdate which allows you to update from within windows, which makes it quite easy (but still a bit dangerous))

I just recently got SoF2, so it was doing this from the start. as for the anime lockups, they happen much rarer and seemed to have existed for a long time.
I cannot remember or pinpoint when I had my first issues there.

I have ad-aware and I have regularly kept things clean with it, I haven't yet tried spybot though.

I haven't tried flashing BIOS because as you said, it's risky. I guess I'll have to look into seeing if I got any updates for my mobo BIOS and see if it helps?

Ok.
I flashed my BIOS. It added a BIOS password for some reason and I had to go through a mess resetting my BIOS to get back into my own system.

I'm back. I tried SoF2 again... and well, it froze. BIOS update did not fix the problem.

This is ridiculous.

Sigh, failures..

I've done all this tonight:
- Updated my BIOS
- Updated all windows stuff from Windows update
- Ensured my Video drivers were up-to-date (they are)
- Used Adaware and Spybot S&D to wipe out anything they found.
- Closed all programs when playing game
- Used lower detail settings than normal

Everything I've done and it still freezes up. I'm starting to think I have a hardware combination that this game is being picky about and won't work right.

Oh and now I have a BIOS problem. Even after I cleared the BIOS password and reset to defaults due to that, I still get this msg that pops up at every time I startup
"Press <F4> to resume" And when i press f4 it just goes on bootup. I cannot find a single BIOS setting that controls it doing that. Seems updating my BIOS made my BIOS less stable than it used to be.

All this and I still cant play SoF2. This sucks

Figured it out

It seems i had to drop my AGP from 8x to 4x to play without lockups. I guess sacrificing some FPS is better than rebooting every 5-20 minutes.

boring

I have radeon x300 and it freezes on sof2. I have tried setting key repeat and delay to slowest and longest and this extends time till freeze.

maybe someone who knows how to edit registry to eliminate key repeat while in game and reset on exit can try this??????????????

sof2 works fine on my other p4 with nividia

HAs anyone resolved this problem with sof2 (Q3 engine) and ati cards yet?

If not I Will be forced to attempt to make a program to slow down or turn off the key repeat speed.

I am running the latest catalyst of course on a ATI X1600XT PCIE....

Sof2 crashing like hell... I can't stand it anymore puke:

Anyone :blackeye:

I have been reading up on this as I have the same errors. What I have noticed in a few of the forums I have seen a trend... Small, but a trend none the less.

imho The game just wont work with the newer PCIe cards. It doesn't seem to be a problem only for ATI cards as I am running nVidia with the same crashes
