Google ditches hyperlink underlines as part of subtle redesign

If you noticed that something looked a little “off” on Google recently but just couldn’t place your finger on it, here’s your answer. The search giant quietly rolled out a subtle redesign yesterday that does away with the familiar underline, among other things.

In addition to ditching underlined hyperlinks, a longtime staple of the Internet, Google has also increased the font size of search result titles by two points and evened out all of the line heights. In a Google+ post on the matter, lead search designer Jon Wiley said the changes improve readability and create an overall cleaner look.

Wiley also took the opportunity to point out the fact that Google also brought over their new ad labels from mobile, a move that aims to make the multi-device experience more consistent. This, in turn, will make it easier for them to develop and ship improvements across the board.

Google is one of the first major search engines to do away with underlined hyperlinks as Yahoo and Bing still use them. Upstart DuckDuckGo, meanwhile, does not use underlined links and their search results are even cleaner than Google’s new design through the use of truncated URLs.

The changes aren’t really new for Google, however, as they’ve been pushing similar tweaks to mobile devices since last year.

I’m not entirely sold on it just yet but I’m not big on change, either. What do you think about the new layout? Sound off in the comments section below!

I don't mind it. However, most of the time I just use Bing for the rewards points. Google does better with more specific searches, so I go to that when Bing fails me, the rewards are just enough to keep me at Bing, for now.

I don't like it, but I'll get used to it.
What Google needs to do is spread out the results margins. Right now they take up the left third of my screen and the rest is blank.

I thought my google was broken or something because I happened to switch to windows 7 and everything started to look different. Forgot about until now since I didn't see any news

I think that's because there are ads. I wouldn't know though because adblock :p (or it's to be consistent with mobiles...)

I think if you're going to do away with the underline, (and I'd rather have it), then you need to aggravate the difference in color, perhaps even type face, between standard text and hyperlink. Not everybody sees @ 20/20, and not everybody has perfect color discrimination either.

I prefer DuckDuckGo. Its search is easier to fine-tune. I do need to switch to Bing or Google from time to time, especially for very technical subjects, but for the rest DDG delivers quickly and hassle-free.

I've barely noticed the change in google's search... hum...

I'm sorry but... what reward points??

@Kibaruk You get blocks of points early on for various super easy things, the easy point giving runs out pretty quick. After that, you get 0.5 pts for every search. At my work I end up doing a lot of searching, so I rack up a few points each day, and they usually give you 2 points for clicking on some article they want you to read (you just click, don't have to read). Then you exchange points for various crap, most of it sucks. But I have used it for Hulu Plus, haven't found anything else I want to trade my points in for, but they have a few gift certificates, xbox stuff, and now OneDrive for a year.

If you want send me a referal through inbox I'll take a look once I get back home.

I had noticed a bit of difference but gave it no thought until I read this article. I don't care, as long as it works properly I'm happy.

A Google search for Techspot in Firefox still shows the underlines. But the same search in IE has no underlines. Looks like it's browser dependent?

A special thanks for our sponsors at DuckDuckGo! Back to you Bob.
