Google Maps already allowed saving places of interest within its mobile app into a single “saved” tab. Now, the company is expanding upon the functionality on its iOS and Android apps with the ability to save places into multiple categorized lists which can then be shared with others.

There are three preset lists that serve as basic examples of how the new feature could be used — “Favorites,” “Starred Places,” and “Want to Go”. You can of course create your own custom lists which can be set as private, publicly discoverable by any user on Google Maps, or simply shared with a link.

The new features gives a more social feel to the app akin to Foursquare. Users can build lists around a specific event, like an upcoming trip, or to recommend places for out-of-towners or get really specific with different lists for your favorite coffee shops, restaurants, parks and so on.

To access saved lists you can go to Your Places in the side menu and then open the saved tab. Icons for the places you’ve saved to lists will appear on the map itself. Lists are viewable on mobile or desktop, even offline if you download the relevant area in advance.
