GoPro has announced its second new action camera in as many months. Unlike the Hero+ LCD, however, the new camera is much more than a modest revision of an old favorite.

The Hero4 Session is the first camera since 2007 to deviate away from the iconic rectangular shape we’ve come to expect from GoPro. The cube-shaped Session weights just 2.6 ounces and measures roughly an inch and a half in all directions, making it 50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than other Hero4 cameras. It's getting reviewed already, too.

Perhaps best of all, adventure-seekers won’t need those clear plastic housings as the camera is waterproof down to 33 feet out of the box.

The Session can record video at up to 1440p resolution at 30 frames per second or 1080p at up to 60 fps (sorry, no 4K recording with the Session). There’s also a photo mode that can snap images at up to 8-megapixels (3,264 x 2,448 resolution) and a multi-shot mode that can capture up to 10 photos in one second.

GoPro managed to stuff a 1,030mAh battery inside the Session which should be good for an hour and 55 minutes of record time at 1440p30 with Wi-Fi off.

The GoPro Hero4 Session goes on sale July 12 priced at $399. It’ll be available in either the standard edition or the Surf edition. Both are priced identically; the only difference is the type of mounts it uses.

At this rate the next version will be able to fit in your navel, which will be an interesting perspective as long as they don't include smell-a-vision as a feature ....
