Help decide between laptop and PC.

Hello.

Am not sure if this is the right sub-forum nor if its the right forum to ask this but here goes nothing.

Am planning to go uni next year and was wondering whether to buy a laptop or PC.
Now am completely ignorant on such matters but willing to learn quick. What spec should I be looking for? If I want a device that can handle more than two or three applications as the same time, it should be fast, good quality videos ( for occasional movies) and last but not least a device thats easly compatible with other devices such as doing double monitors, connecting to consoles.

example. I know that if I want lots of space, so i look for 240 GB hard drive. What does the 512 RAM do?

Very sorry if this is confusing but help if very much appreciated. Few pc or laptop suggestions are welcomed aswell.

I'm answering your heading (and the 512 part) The purchase ideas can come from your school or any leading brand manufacture ie Dell

A laptop is bought if you want to be mobile. ie You would like to use your computer at Home or elsewhere (I'm assuming you do want this)

The 512Meg of Ram, is the absolute minimum (these days <- in case other support replies) for Windows Xp, and 1Gig preferred (Minimum) for Vista
Ram is used for your running programs (ie if you want Antivirus plus the Internet plus a whole bunch of other programs running at the same time) the more Ram the better.

On average Xp works well with 1Gig of Ram
Vista works well with 2Gig of Ram
