How long should i keep my external hard drive running for?

Should i only have the external hard drive running as long as i need it and shut it off when i'm not using it?

I don't think it matters it the same as the hard drive in your computer case execpt it is externel and has a larger outer casing around it feel free to turn it off when your not using it it might extend the life of the drive but I don't think it matters.

Spinning hard drives up and down actually shortens their lifrespan..
