Since there are so few devices that need CPUs, and they all do the same job, we only need one.
Yeah, that's the opposite of reality. Ignoring the statement on "less than a decade ago," there are as many vendors making CPUs as there are necessary uses. A market truth is that a company that can't sell its product by 'hook or crook," will go out of business -- or get a government contract because a politician was paid off (ooh, I did mention the crook part, didn't I)..
