Good grief.

Thanks for reminding me why I dont come to forums.

I almost slipped in and thought they might be useful, but you guys saved me! Thanks!

I have been working as an XP consultant for over 3 years. I was on the beta team at M$. The only thing Im a newbie too is this forum, and Im glad I am!

This is how you guys treat people? Sad.

Look how this thread fell apart.

You have nothing better to do than post crappy little snipes to make you feel better about yourself?

a: to date no one could answer my problem!

b: no has even correctly tested the problem! I stated earlier IM USING 1600.

c: after talking to M$ there is no way to change the xp default window on new folders!

But I suppose those of you "users" wouldnt know as you are only using 1280. As "users" dont know the difference between high res and low.

But dont get your panties in a bunch, as Im unsubscribing, Im sure all of you will feed on this like little school girls on new gossip.

Thanks again for saving me more time, I wont be back.

Get off your fat geek asses, get a girlfriend and start treating people with respect.

Oh and if you even knew what paypal was, you would know that the $ gets changed to whatever you want.

I would just like to that everyone who made the new member feel so welcome, this is the very reason why many of the members of TS don't come around much if any anymore. This place has become a dumping ground for stupid remarks and insulting comments. It really ticks me off when I see behavior like this. I think its time this place shaped up, else many more members will be leaving.

Oh, and to you, acneil, I tested it and it worked. I even tested at 1600(even though it makes my eyes bleed on my 19") and it still works, I never thought resolution would make a difference, else I'd have tested it in the first place.
I don't know what the hell your problem is, but you need to get over yourself and get a life.

As for me, I may see you guys around, I may not, this forum has beecome nothing but a joke and a bunch of morons asking questions in ways that it is impossible to give them an acceptible answer. If something doesn't change around here with the quality and attitude, I'll find something else to do with my spare time.

And, don't go thinking that this prick is running me off, this has been building over a long period of low quality and all the BS that gets posted on these forums.

I have to agree with Storm, lately we havent had many good posts like I remember we used to get a couple years back...Dont leave yet though Storm, I like reading your posts, always very helpful....

And anceil, what is wrong with you bud? no one was insulting you, Phat was just just joking around....

~!!!!Notice!!!!~ Dont always take things as though they are directed at you in an insulting manner!!!

I believe that the problem may be due to people becoming bored, when things drag along and no solution is found. This leads to some light-hearted fun, just to shift focus for a little while, before returning to the main topic. Now, I'm not a phsycologist, but that's my take on this.

acneil: I think you went a little over the top with your remarks. Despite what you think was happening, it might surprise you to know that many of us were investigating your issue, and trying out suggestions, in the background, in between bouts of posting. I don't think that anyone meant any disrespect towards you, or anyone else.

For anyone wanting only focused and clear responses, and no flannel/joking at any time, then the only forums that are likely to meet your needs will be technical forums of major software/hardware vendors. This doesn't mean that other forums are a waste of time, but it does suggest that when we don't have an answer, then sometimes things take a lighter turn and people tend to have a little fun while they are thinking of other solutions. Its certainly nothing to be offended by as no one here deliberately tries to offend other users.

As to the window size problem, I am also experiencing this, and none of the suggested solutions work for me (although I dont see this as a problem myself). I suspect that there may be a configuration file somewhere that maintains these default sizes, but thats only a guess.

OK, FIRST THING IS FIRST. I HAVE NO TIME OR INTEREST IN A FLAME WAR, AND AM ONLY PASSINGLY INTERESTED IN YOUR POST AT ALL.

That said, I think you have the wrong idea about a few things. Let's quickly discuss them, if you like.

OK, let's take this one stage by stage. First of all, I was joking. I thought I had made that clear, but if not, I am truly sorry.

Forums are EXTREMELY useful, particularly this one, which is why I bother to thanklessly post here every day. If you got off of your high horse for a minute, and spend some time here (which I am certainly not going to beg you to do) you would realise that.

OK, I am very sorry to have to say this, but:

If you can say something like that, you are almost certainly a newbie in every sense of the word, 3 years IT work or not. 3 years is nothing. I've seen people work in IT 20 years and be rubbish.

A true guru knows that one is a learner in all things and remains one - in this sense, we are ALL newbiez forever.

Saying you are an experienced in everything except forums CONVINCES me that you are here to ask questions, not answer them. I am only here to answer them, as you will be told by anyone who comes here for any amount of time.

It convinces me that you are unaware of the true nature and scope of computing. I think that that is true for me as well, but much more so you, if you can speak of the world of computing in such a careless and casual manner.

I think you are letting this get to you FAR too much. Chill out. Relax. Calm down. I barely even poked you, and you jumped a mile and then wanted a fight. Look how you have lost your cool so quickly, demeaned yourself on the internet of all places.

With childish outbursts like that, I indeed do hope you are never back. If you are, however, ready to behave like an adult, we will have you back provided...

You cut out the childish talk and insults.

I am not trying to madden or exasperate you - I am merely stating the facts as are easily discernable here by anyone with some sense and maturity.

I have nothing against you (how could I? I don't know who you are at all!) I just wanted you to know what I thought about your comments, since mine (which I honestly thought were mild) seemed to have gotten to you so much. If I struck a nerve, I am very sorry indeed.

Back to the original topic, I do not understand why this doesn't work. It works fine for me, I thought maybe there was a possibility that one of my many Registry hacks may have also been playing a part in it working, but when I tried it on machines that do not belong to me, I find it hard to believe that they would have the same hacks implimented. Especially since these are people who don't have a lot of technical computer knowledge.

I would like to know if anyone else is able to get this to work or not and what version of Windows you are running, and all the little details that the original thread starter had listed or whatever.

Maybe I'm creating the folders incorrectly, maybe there is a certain way to created them and make it not work?

Here's my attempt ...

Windows XP SP1 fully patched and up to date (1024*768):

1. Right-click desktop and select [New>Folder].
2. Name the folder sb1.
3. Open the folder and resize it as required.
4. Select [Tools>Folder Options] then untick 'Remember each folder's view settings' then click 'Apply'.
5. Next click 'Apply to all Folders' button, then click OK button to close the properties box.
6. Close the folder.
7. Right-click desktop and select [New>Folder].
8. Name the folder sb2.
9. Open the folder, and behold, it is sized according to windows default, and not to the size you previously set.

If you rename the folder to the same name as a folder previously created, then it will take on that folder's size, and will not keep any settings that you may have made when you created it. Very strange indeed.

Folders are always created at default size set somewhere in windows, and cannot be changed accross the board to new size settings.

Folders size (and possibly other settings) is remembered by the *name* of the folder, which if it previously existed, then any new folder given that name will take on those settings.

New folders with new names always default to the *original* windows default size.

If I've missed something, then let me know and I'll try again.

Ok I tried it using a similar technique as Nic, but I also added storms shift close to it. And every NEW folder I created and named differently on the desktop went back to crap size, not what I had adjusted it too.
I also created a new folder on the desktop and renamed it to something new, then resized it, then did the apply to all folders thing and then the shift close. Went on with what I said in the first paragraph, then upon seeing it wasn't working deleted the folders I created on the desktop. I then recreated the same one that I had deleted (the one that I resized), and I opened it up - again crap size. I believe the thread starter dude said that his opens up the fixed size (the one he wants) if you create a folder by the same name as one you have resized in the past, that is not true on my computer.
This leads me to think that since I'm not displaying the results of the thread starter or Stormbringer that it is something that we may not intuitively think of.....

This all assumes I read things correctly above which I may not have.

Sounds like you did it right SNGX, Nic did part out of sequence, but seemd to also get the same results as you. I need to find a common link here that is either making it work, or not work.
I don't even care about solving this for the guy who asked it anymore, I want to solve it now for my own curiosity, as well as for anyone who asks this in the future.

very interesting thread here (except for the mini-flame war). i never really paid much attention to the default folder size on windows xp, but then again, there is always something new to learn everyday (even about folders). ;)

i agree with Phantasm. although three years in a particular field of study or career may seem like a lot, it really is not. there are so many unknowns yet to be discovered.

acneil, if you are still here, you do realize that you committed a lot of fallacies in your "agrument" against this forum. "panties in a bunch," and "Get off your fat geek asses, get a girlfriend...". i'd say ad hominem to that. also, how would getting a girlfriend address the problem of finding out about default windows sizes in xp?

yeah my dad will work with other men, with a higher degree then him, getting paid x3 more then him, that have been in the industry longer and they are idots. Cant write the code properly, bugs all over.. fools they are. Gets me mad because then he has to fly across the country to fix their mistakes.

Just thought I'd add that in  lol

Hmm maybe I should start this 'create' new folder technique as my download folder’s getting a little too big (1322 files 19 GB)

:D

Hey thanks guys I found it in the search while trying to sort out everything opening in teenie tiny folders. The shift when closing has it sorted and a fine read into tha bargain.:D :D

The shift when closing trick works for opening explorer, but not when creating new folders. A handy trick none the less.

I had a similar problem trying to get Windows Explorer to start up large enough in Windows XP. I like the Details view, and it would always start up too small to show the last column, and wouldn't remember the last size. So every time I started Windows Explorer it came up the default size and I'd have to resize it. So I found a free tool called AutoSizer at South Bay Software that seems to work.

It automatically resizes Windows Explorer every time I start it, and it works with with your scenario also (create a new folder on the desktop and AutoSizer can resize it every time you open it). I just started using it 10 minutes ago, so no guarantees, but so far so good.

Ryan

The only way i can think of is to open the folder. Then maximize it then exit right after. When you open it again it will be big.

My solution to this (which may have tendancies leading back to the dos days, and autocad work) has always been to do everything by keyboard. I seldom resize folders because i generaly know where everything is, and filenames, and also do most everything with keyboard shortcuts. Sure the window size is generaly too small to be usefull, but i only have to resize it when i screwed up something by memory and have to see what i've been doing.

Certainly not a fix, just my own coping mechanism.

as for the flame war, im new to techspot, and have been quite happy with ANY responses i get on a topic, since people are saving me hours of work generaly, or at least saving me time in double checking, and all for FREE. I wouldn't take it personaly if i get flamed for being a forum newb at all since the pro's of the helpful people outweigh the cons by far in my opinion of those who may be bored or frustrated and need to flame to let off steam. Just my take on it anyways.
