In North Korea, your phone secretly takes screenshots every 5 minutes for government surveillance

The big picture: A smartphone smuggled out of North Korea is offering a rare – and unsettling – glimpse into the extent of control Kim Jong Un's regime exerts over its citizens, down to the very words they type. While the device appears outwardly similar to any modern smartphone, its software reveals a far more oppressive reality.

The phone was featured in a BBC video, which showed it powering on with an animated North Korean flag waving across the screen. While the report did not specify the brand, the design and user interface closely resembled those of a Huawei or Honor device.

It's unclear whether these companies officially sell phones in North Korea, but if they do, the devices are likely customized with state-approved software designed to restrict functionality and facilitate government surveillance.

One of the more revealing – and darkly amusing – features was the phone's automatic censorship of words deemed problematic by the state. For instance, when users typed oppa, a South Korean term used to refer to an older brother or a boyfriend, the phone automatically replaced it with comrade. A warning would then appear, admonishing the user that oppa could only refer to an older sibling.

Typing "South Korea" would trigger another change. The phrase was automatically replaced with "puppet state," reflecting the language used in official North Korean rhetoric.

Then came the more unsettling features. The phone silently captured a screenshot every five minutes, storing the images in a hidden folder that users couldn't access. According to the BBC, authorities could later review these images to monitor the user's activity.

The device was smuggled out of North Korea by Daily NK, a Seoul-based media outlet specializing in North Korean affairs. After examining the phone, the BBC confirmed that the censorship mechanisms were deeply embedded in its software. Experts say this technology is designed not only to control information but also to reinforce state messaging at the most personal level.

Smartphone usage has grown in North Korea in recent years, but access remains tightly controlled. Devices cannot connect to the global internet and are subject to intense government surveillance.

The regime has reportedly intensified efforts to eliminate South Korean cultural influence, which it views as subversive. So-called "youth crackdown squads" have been deployed to enforce these rules, frequently stopping young people on the streets to inspect their phones and review text messages for banned language.

Some North Korean escapees have shared that exposure to South Korean dramas or foreign radio broadcasts played a key role in their decision to flee the country. Despite the risks, outside media continues to be smuggled in – often via USB sticks and memory cards hidden in food shipments. Much of this effort is supported by foreign organizations.

The level of surveillance is horrifying, but what really gets me is how it's all disguised as a regular smartphone. It’s not just censorship — it’s the illusion of modernity wrapped around total control. That contrast makes it even more dystopian.

Forget spyware — this is more like "stateware."

That "oppa = comrade" auto-correct really sums it all up — even your flirting has to be ideologically pure.

So many times more private than a "Copilot+ PC" with Windows recall which snapshots your screen every few seconds.

And before you tell me the difference is one is for you and one is for the government, please review Snowden's leaked NSA presentations re: Microsoft's cooperation with various illegal NSA mass surveillance programs.

We are busy pitying the North Koreans while we get our words censored, our thoughts censored and our free speech censored here in America.

Students get doxxed for joining protests.

Our 1st Amendment rights and 2nd Amendment rights slowly being eroded.

Soon, we will be no different than Pyongyang.

It's no wonder Trump won (twice).

I think the biggest problem in the US is that we are nolonger capable of producing a candidate that should be elected. Trump never should have won, but people would rather hear someone speak the truth while not being able to run the country than be lied to by someone who isn't able to run the country. The absurdity of these last 3 elections is difficult to put into words.

China as well probably.
If anyone from my company goes to China even for vacation the company says to act as if you are under surveillance and always behave as if you are being surveilled (I.e don't do anything you don't want someone else see you doing).

The US administration has given Palantir access to the private data of every US citizen with the intent to create a map of society. But this isn't odd as Snowden revealed that the NSA spies on everyone.

Don't worry, we will have even worse in the west and people will simply accept it like gullible sheep.

They'll just scare you with China/Russia or some other entity or convince you it's to stop terrorism and other bad stuff, but in reality it will be used to control you.
The difference is that people in the west pay M$py to do it. M$py have always spied on their users through Echelon, Prism, Copilot and others we know nothing about.

I disagree. I think Trump is absolutely the perfect face that should be on the downfall of the deeply-indebted, morally bankrupt, fiscally bankrupt and overtly corrupt nation that is the USA. George Carlin foretold of the rise of Trump. A politician so full of BS that he wears it like a suit.

In the rest of the world, users share their data constantly with social media, so who's worse. I trust big tech run by junky tech bros as little as I trust Kim Jong Un

Students get doxxed for joining protests.

Students are getting doxxed to inform prospective employers of true nature of their applicants.

Employers have a right to know that political activist hiding behind bachelor degree job application.

Employers have a right to know who is stupid beyond any hope and who goes to university to really study.

Protesting against what's popular now without thinking who's pro quo is not university level education, it is kindergarten level. Palestinians? Forty thousand combatants killed? How about half a million Syrians killed in civil war? Why they don't protest that? Because it's not popular and since it's not they don't give a ****. Everyone have the right to know who these students are, to avoid them like dumpster fire.

Exactly. Trump isn't a cause; Trump is a symptom—a symptom of a political class that's become so out of touch with the average American that the moment someone came forward that (if you were to ask the disillusioned people) began to speak truth to power, Trump's election was all but guaranteed. For so long we've had the normal people, the average person on the street, and then a political class that believes that they're better than us, above the law, untouchable.

So yes, Trump isn't a cause... Trump is a symptom of the absolute disconnect from those in power from those who they are supposed to represent. And the thing is, the political class has no one else to blame but themselves. They created this mess when they started taking huge donations from wealthy donors disguised as "campaign contributions" and stopped listening to the plight of the average person on the street.

And if you think that this is a United States only thing, think again. The UK is also having the same issue. Jonathan Pie has repeatedly called out for the Labour Party to help the working class. After all, it's in their name—The Labour Party. Yet, if you ask the average Brit, they too have become just as disillusioned with their political class as the average American.

Getting back over to the United States, the Democrats have historically been the party of the worker—you know, the party that supported unions, good paying jobs, affordable healthcare, etc. Yet, over the last few years they've been for anything but that. You can see that in the people and companies they've taken political campaign money from. So yes, once again Trump isn't a cause... Trump is a symptom of the Democrats forgetting who they're supposed to represent. Now, am I stupid in thinking that the Republicans have my best interest at heart? F**k no!

Mind you, this is coming from a Trump voter who voted for him three times. Do I regret my vote this time around? You bet your @ss I do!

Who were the slave owners, segregationists, Jim Crowe? Democrats. Clinton worked for the common man? Obama's administrations were chosen by Citi, how is that working for the common man? Flooding the nation with illegals is supposed to benefit the working class? We, who live outside the US, know what's going on in the nation better than most of those who are in as we're not blinded by the Main Stream Liars.

You are right about the UK, they are all the same bunch of traitors. Kir is a traitor not only to his party but also nation, as were Bliar and that Brown stain. Bliar betrayed the unions, among his many crimes.

How to say you dont know anything about American politics without saying you know nothing about American politics.

What about Liz, Borris, Rishi, Theresa and David?

The truth is, UK politics is in the toilet, stuck permanently flushing with no good parties or candidates strong enough to push the toilet handle back up, It's been that way since the 60's but went into overdrive after the 2008 financial crash.
Margaret Thatcher you could argue was a strong enough leader, she was able to stop the flushing, but only so she could super charge the water intake and allow it to flush twice as hard.

It warms my heart to read all these post on a tech savvy site.
In my home country Netherlands we have tweakers as our main tech site all of your post would get downvotedd. Post something a couple of times and you get a perma ban as I have.

The U.S economy and society are giant spy machines! People signing up for VPNs under the delusion it hides their online activity and position ignoring the fact that all U.S based VPNs are likely operating under National Security Letters mandating that they collect activity data (also shared with five & eight eyes countries). Believing the advertising of the VPN over the obvious reality since 9/11. Majority of website are encrypted by default, but that only protects your data in transit. All your activity on the web server is in clear text and visible, adding a VPN changes none of that. Both your ISP and VPN have your information and your debit, credit card and bank account information. Both your ISP and VPN use defined blocks of IP addresses in each country they operate in. Adding the fact that all PCs, laptops, cars and phones have GPS chips built in. You were PWNED before you even logged in the first time!

Each of your debit and credit cards also have embedded RFID chips (for touchless scanning at checkout), which broadcast their information in clear text to anyone that can build or buy a reader and roam the streets collecting your card\account data in the few seconds it takes to pass someone on the sidewalk, in a store, or driving past! Many retailers and office buildings use cell phone wifi and Bluetooth signals broadcast from your phone to track you inside the store\building and NO, a VPN will not hide these signals. Yeah, the U.S is so much better than North Korea!!
