Is it ok to run anti-virus in safe mode?

Hi there, my friends laptop is running very slow and I suspect it has a virus. I'm about to run the 8 step program from the sticky guide but running the AVG takes around 4 hours at the moment. Would it be o.k to run these steps in safe mode as that runs a lot faster.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes Safe Mode with Networking (so as to be able to update )
Also AVG8 is not all that good, try Avira (found in the guide) it's a lot better

But you need to un-install AVG first
