Is this Malware?

I was just downloading something and while I was in the middle of browsing the internet my laptop went black for 1 second and then a blue screen popped up, I couldn't really read it cause it restarted my computer right away. Once I got back onto Vista the mouse wasnt working, so I did a manual restart and everything seems fine now. Is this a bad sign? Could the file I was downloading caused it? I have anit virus and windows security up? Also, the laptop was hot but, my laptop always does get a little hot and it restarts but never has the blue screen came up.

Laptop is a Dell Vostro A860 purchased in Dec.2008
running avast anti virus

Most likely not malware, but a software glitch.

But.. you said you were downloading... was this via "Filesharing" (aka P2P - software like BitComet, Vuze/Azureus, uTorrent, etc)? If so, the likelihood of infection is very high! Music sharing, Cracks/Warez, etc are all prime suspects for the distribution of malware, and since you let them in the door... they have already bypassed your "protection"..

Something might be discovered to send you back here, but if your AV and Firewall are up to date and properly configured, and you practice "safe browsing" Virus or Malware become less likely...

All my virus protectors are up to date, I just did a System Restore from a backup from 4 days ago(way before I downloaded the suspected file) does that mean if there was any malware it will be gone?
