Jack Dorsey: Twitter will ban all political advertising moving forward

What just happened? While Facebook seems content on taking a hands-off approach with respect to political ads, Twitter has decided to stop running them on its platform. The decision was announced by CEO Jack Dorsey, who made a series of remarks on the company's commitment to stopping the spread of misinformation on its platform.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said in a long thread that the company has decided to place a ban on all political ads and interest advocacy ads. The decision will take effect on November 22, and represents a significant change after the company has been dwelling on how to create an effective content policy for years.

Twitter will publish the final policy on November 15, but in the meantime it will notify advertisers that only ads that are in support of voter registration will be allowed. Dorsey thinks this course of action isn't likely to favor incumbents. He notes that "we have witnessed many social movements reach massive scale without any political advertising."

The idea is that political reach should be earned instead of bought, by letting people decide when to spread the message using retweets as opposed to the micro-targeting practiced by advertisers. The executive also noted the company would not be able to lie to its users about the profitability of misinformation, taking a subtle shot at Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who recently described revenue from political ads as insignificant to his company's bottom line, despite the fact that experts have shown that political ad spending is about to reach an all-time high.

To put things in perspective, Dorsey said that Twitter wants to focus on solving the platform's root problems, and accepting money for political ads would only go against that goal. He also called for the need of new regulation that would ensure no internet company has the power to tip the balance in elections.

By contrast, Facebook has so far decided to keep its stance on letting politicians say anything under the guise of protecting free speech. That decision has backfired, with even own employees asking to rethink that strategy. Also, a man in California is now running for governor just to see how much one can lie in political ads before Facebook will decide it should take responsibility for paid content on its platform.

Might be the smartest move they have made BUT considering how much of Donald Trumps tweets are self promotions, does that qualify as Political Advertising? I would expect to hear the Dem's' try to make a case of it .....

No, because Donald Trump is not a politician and is not from DC. The American people voted him in (as an outsider) to go into DC and clean up the swamp. Of the life-long politicians who want to live off the political system their whole life.

The ones who been there so long, that owe favors and make deals behind the American people's back.

Ban all Democratic adds, they are all lies anyway

I wish the people would realize they are doing this because Trump has raised more donation money and spends more campaign advertising money than all of the Democrat candidates combined. These liberal social media companies are not doing this to play fair. Social media and major news outlets will do everything they can just to get him outed. The hypocrisy is blinding. They don't even hide it anymore.

Hilarious, or it would be if that Rush Lipblam shampoo had not gotten into your brains.

Like it or not, Humpty Trumpty became a politician the second he announced his candidate for president. He was ideally suited for it as he uses his anus for his mouth.

As for draining the swamp, is that what the revolving door of 45's cabinet is?

This is the type of responses we get from the left who really have no argument. Insults after insults. If Democrats would spend more time actually running the country then worrying about Trump's tweets and impeaching him the US might be much much better for it. Still waiting for that sky to fall while he is in office. By all means continue.

Right. Just like republicans wasted how many millions of dollars on Hillary Clinton investigations without anything chargeable?

And how many times did house republicans vote to overturn Obama care?

By all means, continue yourself, someday, you might attain the high moral ground. In the meantime, feel free to ignore his revolving cabinet. In no means does it indicate something is wrong with this administration.

If comments from the right were not just regurgitated Rush Lipbalm stomach contents, you might actually get a real conversation.

All Humpty Trumpty knows how to do is run the country into the ground. As many predicted, his actions as stable genius in chief are showing their economic mettle.

Doesn't matter what Facebook does. Trump/Pence 2020 are a fact.

The People can see through all the political bias, can see the Russian/Chinese shills on the forums/discussions/posts/etc. Most of the political discourse on message board 3 years ago during the election, wasn't even with real voters. It was just young kids playing a TDS mocking game, of who can be the biggest victim poster.

I say make posting on any open forum, cost a "digital postage stamp" of $0.05.

That way if you have something to say, you won't say in over and over... but you'll make a small concise point and keep down on the forums clutter. Or trolls.
