Linksys WRT54G Port Forwarding

New to the forum.

I had a very concerning experience wanted to get some advice. I just loaded Tightvnc this weekend and was testing it. Had to open ports 5800 and 5900 on my Linksys WRT54G router to allow access to test it. I also turned on logs for the first time.

Today I went into the log and saw a half dozen incoming IP's with destination ports of 5900, a couple I recognize as my access but the others I don't recognize. I only turn on the VNC server when I intend to allow access.

And just now I disabled the ports again.

I was planning on using VNC to help my mother on her computer and she also has a WRT54G at her end with the same ports open.

How insecure is this???

Use nonstandard ports (you can set them in the VNC admin properties page), 59000 and 58000 would be the easy ones to remember.

The evil out there constantly scans computers on the internet for all kinds of insecure services listening on standard ports.
