The big picture: There have been quite a few cancellations affecting the tech and gaming world as of late due to the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Sony, Facebook, EA, Kojima Productions, and Unity have all announced they are skipping the Game Developers Conference (GDC) due to coronavirus concerns. Microsoft and Epic are the latest to skip GDC amid the virus fears. With so many companies pulling out, this could cause GDC to be cancelled as well.

"After a close review of guidance by global health authorities and out of an abundance of caution, we’ve made the difficult decision to withdraw from participating at Game Developers Conference 2020 in San Francisco," Microsoft wrote in their Game Stack blog. "The health and safety of players, developers, employees, and our partners around the world is our top priority. Especially as the world is experiencing growing public health risks associated with coronavirus (COVID-19)."

In lieu of physically attending the event, Microsoft will instead run a digital-only event March 16-18th. The company will livestream game developer sessions, panel discussions, Xbox Series X hardware discussions, and Project xCloud talks. Microsoft usually hosts an ID@Xbox event at GDC to highlight indie developers and games but the company hasn't specified whether that's also cancelled.

Likewise, Epic has declined to attend GDC. As the developer behind the hugely popular Unreal Engine, Fortnite and the Epic Games Store, their absence will certainly be felt. Epic was set to hold multiple panels along with its annual "State of Unreal" briefing. This briefing normally yields major announcements concerning the future of the Unreal Engine.

According to the World Health Organization, the coronavirus has infected over 82,200 people and claimed 2,804 lives globally, mostly in mainland China. While there are about 60 confirmed cases in the United States, some U.S. cities such as San Francisco have already declared a state of emergency to prepare for a potential outbreak.

For the first time in its history, Mobile World Congress was cancelled due to similar concerns. With so many companies pulling out of GDC, one has to wonder if it will continue to proceed. If the virus continues to spread, it may threaten to cancel other major events this year including Google I/O, Apple's WWDC, and perhaps even the Tokyo Olympics.

If you were planning to buy stocks... let the market bleed for now.

Just wait until you hear the media say "it's under control"...then buy buy buy.

Ain't the media claiming it's under control .... unless you're talking about Fox News or that rump Trump .... the world knows this is very serious stuff and GDC would be wise to cancel now rather than risk being a contributor to the pandemic among the high tech companies.

And give it another week or so and you can buy the whole damn stock market! LOL

This is just like any other virus. While caution should always be taken, this is being hyped a little to much. The flu has killed more this year than this virus. 80k infected but only 2800 have died. While tragic, I believe the flu killed 10k in Jan. alone or something like that. Let's not forget most that have died are in China. The virus itself isn't life threatening for most. I just think it's all being overhyped. Be cautious sure but when jobs start to be affected or money, it's going to far. More so when the virus isn't wiping out the planet, mainly ppl just getting sick. Again the flu is more wide spread n killed more. World still has gone on year after year.

Flu have death ratio 0.001 pct. Cvd19 have death ratio 8 pct. Yeah, no difference, let it spread.

Let's not mock the flu that kills us. Covid19 of 2020 stands a good chance of breaking a record. It's more virulent and it popped onto the "It's Virus Time" show at a wonderful time to simply be acceptably alive. What exactly constitutes life in a virus infected world is more simple than it is for us long-chain hydrocarbon eating forms of life, yea Covid-19 only needs to get hot - to be cool.

One thing Covid-19 is not is K-pop. This is a grinding Southern Rock-a-Bye Invasion cominatchya from downtown WOOHAN China Fedex special delivery on a box of li-po batteries.

Man can not defeat the Woohan!

Sit in a closet wimp America!

Governmentally, we're out of gas masks. "Screams". Clorox industrial strength wipies are "likely" going-going-gone. All that's left to clean our hands and snotty noses with are them cheap green chainsaws. Nineteen people have tried to vaccinate me against last years flu. What was it, covid-18? I don't remember, this one, #19 is getting all the attention.

They're going to cut the fuzz off our persistent president if he ****s this up, and you know he will cuz that - is what he does best.

"They" say, during the cold war (what's a "cold war" they shoot ice bullets?) Soviet's used to "catch the flu" and go away (forever) over political/social impropriety. Now the flu has us 'mericans and it's skipping the socality impropriety judgement, we just gotta go dead.

Go wash your HANDS. You have no idea what they've been touched by.

And call your mom.
