Microsoft scales back AI data center expansion amid AI spending boom

Cutting corners: Microsoft and all other Big Tech counterparts have been pouring billions into AI infrastructure, building massive data centers to fuel the next generation of artificial intelligence. However, new developments suggest the company may be reassessing the scale of its spending – at least in some areas.

According to investment firm TD Cowen, Microsoft has recently canceled leases for data center capacity in the U.S., amounting to several hundred megawatts – roughly the equivalent of two large data centers. This move comes despite the company's previously announced plans to invest over $80 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure during its current fiscal year.

Redmond could just have canceled its data center leases for very mundane, understandable reasons, so while the lease cancellations could just be "business as usual," they also raise broader questions about the sustainability of Big Tech's AI spending spree.

Microsoft has reiterated that its overall investment strategy remains unchanged, with AI infrastructure expansion still a priority. A spokesperson confirmed that the company may "adjust spending in some areas" but emphasized that global infrastructure growth will continue to meet rising customer demand.

The decision comes at a time when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has acknowledged the high costs of AI development. In a recent interview, Nadella admitted that while AI represents a transformative opportunity, the technology has yet to deliver significant value proportional to the massive capital being poured into it. He also cautioned that over-investing in AI infrastructure without clear returns could be risky, even for industry leaders like Microsoft.

Microsoft's recalibration reflects a broader debate within the industry: How much should companies invest in AI when the long-term financial returns remain uncertain?

The AI boom has pushed Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta to spend aggressively on data centers, semiconductor partnerships, and custom AI chips, but the path to profitability remains murky.

Meanwhile, OpenAI – Microsoft's key AI partner – has been seeking additional investors beyond Microsoft, including a potential partnership with Oracle and Softbank. This shift may be influencing Microsoft's infrastructure strategy, prompting it to evaluate where and how it deploys resources.

Despite the lease cancellations, Microsoft's AI expansion remains on track, but its latest move signals a more measured approach to spending. As Nadella suggested, the real challenge for AI isn't just scaling up computing power but ensuring that supply and demand align in a way that creates meaningful value.

Is it happening folks, is scaling back on AI spend + tariffs + random fed layoffs gonna kick off this recession we've all been told about for the last 5 years?
Didn't Trump just announce a massive AI project? Something like $500B in funding? It may never happen, but it seems like spending isn't really slowing down.

- Trump said there are "commitments" from the private sector to spend $500B in AI infrastructure in the US. It's called Stargate.

So a huge nothing burger, there is no law and no appropriated funding, just some companies who have ambiguous AI plans making pinky promises.

Between the A.I over spending, the stock market erasing all gains from the past 3 months, Unemployment building up, high store prices creeping up, the chaos going on within the government and the Trump's tariffs the United States will have quite the rude awakening....many are already wishing they voted for Kamela Harris instead.

I wouldn't go quite so far as to say that I wish I had voted for Harris but I can definitely say that I'm regretting my vote for Trump. This chaos, DOGE, this isn't what I voted for. It's like Trump's playing a game of Operation and instead of avoiding the sides, he's making that thing buzz louder than ever. Instead of going in with a scalpel, he's going in with a damn chainsaw. All he needs is a hockey mask and the meme will be complete.

I wasn't aware we're actually collecting ANY tariffs at the moment. Why is everyone acting like they've been paying them for years already?

While we're at it, I don't doubt that machine learning with these models can greatly accelerate solving problems, I also don't see the problem with asking "How do we pay for all of this?"

As for Elon, you have to give him credit. Rather than spending years looking for the perfect rocket design to make reuseable, his method of build something, launch it, and if it works fine, if not, build another one after you find out what went wrong, and launch that. Lather, rinse, repeat, and next thing you know, you're launching more rockets successfully than anyone else on earth.

Just like you most people voted for Trump ignoring all the warnings signs, as you well know everything for Trump is personal and not rational and you can't have that in a president.

Thank you for helping destroying whatever left we had good in this country with you irrational vote.

What's a woman?

It was reported last year that M$lop and others were curbing back on AI spending as they are having a hard time justifying their expenditures due to a lack of return. The bubble will burst, it's only a matter of time and then the market will get flooded by second hand AI cards on a scale that will make the mining craze look like rookie numbers. Will be hilarious.

After researching this guys career and achievements - purely a businessman! Nothing special or notable about his contribution to MS. He has literally destroyed the windows operating system cause he is trying to segment it into a saas, and in a fashion trying to continue development on the OS with a skeleton crew. His bet on AI has obviously backfired. If the tech peoples claims on AI on being so damn good where is my super powerhouse error free Windows 12 release - oh wait it's nowhere to be seen.

Oh can someone please tell me where I can pick up that magazine called bullshit, love to have read haha

Absolutely nothing in the article justifies the title.
Canceled leases is not scaling back. The fact you're no longer shopping from a particular place does not mean you're shopping less overall.
That's just one fragment without context, by itself it doesn't mean anything.

I hope people learn to trust the words that politicians throw at them in the future instead of telling themselves "Oh, he doesn't REALLY mean that, I know better".

It is not like this chaos and razing of the government was a state secret. Project 2025 is exactly what Trump is now implementing, lots of us were warning about this back in fall 2024...

I’m all for cutting government fraud and waste, I’m all for governmental accountability but the way Trump and Musk is going about it is like The Butcher from Diablo 3.

Well, I have to say...after Biden et al had finished with the US -there wasn't much left TO destroy !!

I guess Biden providing us with economy growth after COVID, unemployment at its lowest records, decency, democracy, government stability, and civil peace is not enough for you then now with Trump you lost all that as well.

All you got now is tariffs and pricier eggs....lol

At some point they had to come to terms with the fact that all the data in the world will not result in AGI. This was understood before von Neumann computer was ever built.

100% with you there. Cutting gov waste is needed, but they're going about it all a$$upence.
