networking a xp pro with 98...installed 2 network cards and they both say unplugged

i am running a hp 1.2 gig pc with 256 ram..( bios update is $60 to use more memory) I installed 2 different network cards and got newest drivers from online.
they both say cable unplugged. pc says both are working right and tried using a setup disk on 98 from xp. Am lost as what to do.


Any help greatly appreciated.

Perhaps your network cable is no good or the wrong type. If you are connecting the pc's without a router/hub/switch then you will need a crossover cable and not a straight through rj45.
