What just happened? Nintendo has a hit with its new Switch 2 console, and now it has the numbers to prove it. For the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2026, the company more than doubled its net sales, jumping from 246.6 billion yen to 572.3 billion yen (roughly $3.9 billion). That figure easily beat analyst expectations, with LSEG forecasting just 474.84 billion yen.

Operating profit checked in at 56.9 billion yen versus the 53.46 billion yen that Wall Street was anticipating.

Unsurprisingly, much of that windfall has to do with the launch of the Switch 2 on June 5. Nintendo said sales from its dedicated video game platform business grew 142.5 percent year over year, and that the console's higher price compared to the original helped contributed to a greater increase in net sales.

The Japanese gaming giant noted that sell-through of the Switch 2 exceeded 3.5 million units worldwide in the first four days following launch – the highest-ever sales performance of any Nintendo game system in history. Sell-through over the first seven weeks surpassed six million units globally, with Nintendo noting that demand is still exceeding supply in several countries.

To date, Nintendo has sold 5.82 million Switch 2 units and 8.67 million software titles. For comparison, sales of the original Switch sit at 153.10 million units with 1.42 billion pieces of software moved. Sales of Mario Kart World, the most popular title on the Switch 2, currently sit at 5.63 million copies.

Nintendo said it will continue to bolster supply and production systems to get consoles to consumers as fast as possible. With the holiday season fast approaching, it's not a bad strategy.

It wasn't all sunshine and roses, however, as Nintendo noted a 4.4 percent sales decline in its IP related business compared to the same period last year. The company attributed this to a decrease in revenue from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

I wonder who is actually buying these expensive Switch 2s besides content creators and diehard fans. Many of the announced 1st party titles are just remakes, and not many other new 1st party titles have been announced. There hasn't been a new Mario or Zelda announced, nor a new Smash bros. People are reporting empty lobbies in MKW, and expressing dissatisfaction with the update effectively removing 3-lap races from public lobbies. Even the 1.2.0 update didn't really resolve that. And as much hype as DKB gets, I doubt it's going to carry much interest 6-12 months from now without having an online mode. It's not nearly as big as BOTW for one, and doesn't have that game's item selection either.

My guess is that Nintendo will release 1 big first party game yearly the next 3 years - ontop of that they will also bundle those with special edition Switches for each game. On year 3 they’ll launch an Oled edition to further bolster sales.

There are tens of millions of consoomers out there who need to drop cash on the newest thing and avoid paying their car note or rent payment.

I was at Costco the other day and almost laughed when I saw their Switch 2 bundle for $740 CDN. Hardware that's 4-5 generations behind Sony and MS, and this is the price they expect people to pay for it?

This thing probably costs Nintendo $150-200 to make. I remember the days when people were ok with Nintendo's hardware being garbage because the games were fun and the console was much cheaper than the competition.

Now they want the same price as the latest Xbox/PS for their garbage hardware, and all the games are just remakes and rehashes of crap everyone already played. I wouldn't be surprised if their sales dropped off a cliff once all the die hard fanboys got their fill. Then the price cuts will start.

This makes me the oddball. I purchased a few (we have a very large family of children who live with us). Mainly, it is nothing more than a “Switch Pro”, adding and upgrading items most frequently requested or criticized, allowing the existing catalog of games to play better than before. Akin to upgrading an aging PC or going from PS4 to PS5 and gaining a more solid frame rate.

A revolution it is not, however. The paltry “launch” lineup; while certain upgraded existing games were nice; it was a pale attempt at a real new console launch. In fact, the very absence of those, even just one killer first party title, tells me this wasn’t ever going to be a Switch 2, but the rumored Switch Pro, and Nintendo, far too late in the game, “switched” gears to what we have now; failing to get get anything to market or even enough time for 3rd parties to create something truly unique for the launch.

In the end, it’s mainly only for those seeking an upgrade at this time who feel the current hardware holds them back (such as the case with TotK).

I bought 4 of them on day one. One for me, 3 for the kids.

I can play my favorite 8-bit and 16-bit era games in one convenient location.

I kept all my original consoles but many of them don't work - or the games are damaged from corrosion.

Thanks to the compilations that have been made, buying a bunch of classic games is less expensive than ever. I have the entire Mega Man collection, TMNT Cowabunga collection, Contra collection and I'll be buying Gradius Origins next week.

Many of these games I never, ever played until I got them as compilations.

Eventually there will a Castelvania and Metroid collection on sale that I'll pick up.

The only downside I see is the need for cheaper 1TB and 2TB Micro SD Express cards.

Seeing someone being called out for poor behavior shouldn't be a trigger for you or anyone.
