NYPD says social networking led to all-time low murder rate in 2012

The NYPD says the city’s murder rate hit an all-time low last year thanks largely in part to social networking sites like Facebook. It’s all part of a new creative strategy that police are using to target young gang members and those who like to beat their significant others.

Law enforcement officials noted a record-low 414 murders during 2012 and are down 33 percent already this year. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told the New York Post that teen gang members are responsible for 30 percent of all shootings in the city. As such, they have been charging youngsters with conspiracy and using the threats and taunts they post on social media sites to build cases against them.

A police supervisor highlighted the fact that most people who are assaulted are afraid to contact police for fear of retaliation from gang members. But when rival gang members threaten each other on Facebook, that’s enough to go after them with a conspiracy charge. The supervisor said it isn’t uncommon to lock up 40 to 50 people at a time in sweeps that are similar to the big mafia takedowns of years ago.

But it’s not just gang members that are on the social media watch list. Cops are also cracking down on domestic violence incidents, hoping to intervene in abusive relationships before a husband or boyfriend crosses the line and commits murder. It’s a division that had fallen through the cracks in recent years as police were simply overwhelmed by other cases, according to one NYPD insider.

It would seem like a no-brainer to avoid posting threats or other damning evidence in such a public forum, but I digress.

LOL - no kidding. Some real rocket scientists we're talking about here. But I'm kind of curious as to how many policemen/women are engaged in doing nothing but looking at FB and Twitter feeds?

Whatever they are doing... they need to teach a thing or two to the Chicago police force.

How about that. Gang member bragging about their exploits and threats on FB etc. Seems like a stupid thing to do but then again I'd assume you'd have to be pretty stupid to join some gang in the first place. Maybe these chumps don't know how to set the privacy settings in their social apps. Good on the cops.

Amazing how stupid some people are, we had a case in Sweden where a girl taking a stance on a "hot topic" was threatened and ridiculed on Facebook at a big company FB page by thousands of people.

Apparently the cops could not use the information posted there, they just dropped the case.
But a reporter actually went home to some of those people and asked them why they had threatend her to life (which in itself can give jail time)
What I took away from that was just how utterly stupid people are

While gang members are not likely rocket scientists, this new-found source of info is likely to last only as long as it takes for the gang members to realize that FB bragging is, essentially, snitching. IMHO, the NYPD would have done much better (though I bet the gangs would still figure it out) with this if they had not publicly said anything about these efforts. IMHO, there is stupidity on the part of both the gangs and the NYPD here.

I personally think the NYPD are the stupid ones. Why brag about this, people will just stop making threats on FB once it becomes common knowledge.

Yea Chazz, I guess you are right, I assume I just had higher hopes for humanity "once it becomes common knowledge"
I mean if it was not already then by dear god!

You'd hope enough to detect pedophiles, rapists, murderers, drug dealers etc. It's not doing nothing, it is called intelligence gathering...
