Onboard sound causing restart

Im posting this on behalf of my bf, he recently bought a second hand computer with on board sound, when he tried to update the onboard sound drivers, the computer restarted and mentioned something about media cable failure, and when he checked 'blue screen view' it said something about Portcl.sys, i have researched this and i read up that its about the sound which is ironic.
he has disabled the sound in the bios on boot-up.
how can he get his sound to work without his computer restarting?

From where did he try to update to onboard sound drivers?

Is this system one that was built by an individual or is like an HP, Dell, etc.?

If the onboard sound continues to give issues he could install a relatively inexpensive sound card.
