Only three Android devices made the '10 best-selling phones of 2021' list

How many of apples sales come from companies though, the place I work at orders the phones in bulk, mainly because its very easy for us to setup profiles out of the box.

also since they dont belong to the guys they treat them like dirt so I have a box in the closet full of busted iphones.

Companies also buy Samsungs, Motorolas, Nokias, etc... Would be interesting to see the ratio - but I suspect it's about the same.

There are 4 current iPhones on the market, there are XXXX smartphones using Android.
The graph pretty much shows one thing - if people can choose out of a bigger sample size, they will choose what suits them the most.
True. Every year there are like 100 different Android phone models so Im a little surprised there are 3 on the list.

I wonder if there is a tally that just totals android and ios phones?

Not a surprise that Apple dominates... I'm more surprised that the Pro Max models sold so well... guess that $1000+ phones aren't just niche items.... Makes me excited for a 14 Pro Max or 15 Pro Max...
not surprising since the inflation between, say, 2002 and 2022 are 56,3%. objectively speaking, buying a 1000$ phone in 2022 is the same as buying a 770$ phone in 2002. common business flagship usually costs ~400$ back then, like Nokia 3650 or Blackberry 5810.

I had some time and decided to answer my own question and, turns out yet another Techspot article that is full of holes. I wonder more and more why I pay for this junk.

So here we go, and I'm sure most of you already know this but

Android is on 71% of phones and iOS is on 28%.
Now how the **** can an article like this not mention that?

Yes... but salaries haven't really kept up... or at least, everyone seems to be crying poor these days... yet the flagships are what are dominating sales... Guess people have their priorities :)

It's not really relevant to this article...

Maybe I'm missing something, but I see it as perfectly natural progression of the story.
It's certainly useful information - but the article is only talking about the top phone models... their OS isn't relevant.

Of course, the fact that there are really only 2 smartphone OSes to choose from - and one of them is limited to just Apple - makes for a more interesting study :)

The day that I can either sideload or install whatever the hell I want or add music in whichever format I want without needing to use a computer with some locked down software or access the phone filesystem freely or use a proper browser engine will be the day that I will consider an iPhone.

If you jailbreak an iPhone... all of that is possible now...

Somewhat related, I went from a Samsung galaxy tab2 to the ipad mini because I wanted a small tablet and I couldn't find another I liked with the size of the tab2. I was looking forward to being wowed by Apple, but it didn't happen, but the ipad works fine, but so did my Samsung. I like having a foot in the Apple ecosystem for the experience, but so far I've seen nothing special except the price.

That's because only Apple Jacks are programmed to run out and replace their perfectly working phones every time Apple says to.

As others have said this is a really skewed and lazy way of looking at the numbers. What it really shows is that about 15% of phones sold are one of Apples very limited set of options. The other 85% are almost entirely Android variants. The fact that the top phone gets less than 3% market share further emphasizes that there are a lot of Android phones to choose from, they sell in huge numbers and there is a massive choice of Android phones that consumers get to pick from at all price-points.

"There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics"

Of note in these Statistics is the fact that over 85% of Smartphones sold were NOT Apple.
(Caveat: I'm not certain if there were any Apple models sold in 2021 that are not in that Top 10 list.)
over 85% of android phones that were sold were not apple....

Funny I have both a old LG android and a not so old Iphone, I hate the Iphone and love the old LG. Why, better apps on android, easy to play my mp3 music. can't figure how to download mp3 to apple.

There are very few apps that aren't developed for iOS and Android... and how on earth can you not figure out how to download an mp3 to an iPhone?

Its almost like a superior user experience, privacy and security matter to people.
Sure..... You say something like this but stop looking at new phones sold this year and instead look at total users of all cellphones and what OS they run and the picture is quite clear and it's not even close.... Android dominates.

It just so happens to have massive segmentation which to many might seem bad but to me just means more choice.

I hate companies like apple and their lockdown walled garden approach to ecosystems.

I'll always choose to take the more open platforms even nf that may somehow mean more risk... I'm not a child and I know how to protect myself.
