Resolved PC infected with search redirect virus, please help!

First image: Search term shows as facebook> site name is nlvtra.com
nlvitra.com is not a valid Domain. However, NL Vitra = NL for the 'Netherlands' and Vitra for the Domain is valid..

Run a HijackThis scan for me please: I need to check the Host files.

Download the HijackThis Installer HERE and save to the desktop:

1. Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
2. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
3. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
4. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
5. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
6. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
7. Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Thank you for the images. If I had time, I could play around with them all day- but I tried various breaks in the URLs and found this valid site : http://www.vitra.com/nl-nl/. There is a rand of sites in the Netherlands that hijack host files. I think the IP begins with 213.

FYI: here's where the redirect starts: web&ct=res&cd Putting that in a Google search brings up About 2,110,000 results! And most of the sites are okay. I use the WOT rating system.

As you know, Firefox does a good job of refusing to load a site if it's fraudulent or known to have bad content. WOT helps to know which site in a search to choose or not to choose. but you still should not be getting redirected. I don't see anything obvious in the HJT log.

And yes, this does mean something:

Also, ive found that bookmarks NEVER do the redirection. its only search links, if that means anything.

When you select a Bookmark, the site loads in the browser. So it's not a browser hijack.

I have found one consistency in the redirects: when users in the users are in the UK or neighboring countries and they do a search with a vague search term, they frequently get this type of 'redirect'. The sites aren't 'bad' but I've wondered if their ISP uses this to try and find a link for the term. This makes no technical sense at all, but it's an observation I've made.

Do you have these add-ons in Firefox?
They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
AdBlock Plus
Easy List

If you don't give them a try and see if this makes any difference. I've run both for several years since I tarted on Firefox.

Ive been using adblock plus for a while, its nice.

So, is there any way we can get "rid" of the redirections? Its getting to be annoying. And I cant just reset my computer, i have a lot of stuff on it :/

Please do the following:m Advise print instructions out to have available to follow:

DNS Changer
You will need to do a DNS Flush, then reset your router.
Start> Run> type cmd> enter> at the C prompt type ipconfig /flushdns (note space before the /)

Exit the Command prompt when finished and shut the system down.-

• 
  [1]. Shut down your computer, and any other computer connected to your router.
  [2]. On the back of the router, there should be a small hole or button labelled RESET. Using a bent paper clip or similar item, hold that in continuously for twenty seconds.
  [3]. Unplug the router. Wait sixty seconds.
  [4].Now holding again the reset button, plug it back in. Continue holding the reset button for twenty seconds. Unplug the router again.
  [5].With the router unplugged, start your computer. Run MBAM again.
  [6].Connect to the router again. The turn the router back on.
  [7].When it stabilizes, reboot your workstation and try to access the internet. If you have any issues, access the Router configuration page and re-enter your authentication information.
  [8]. Reboot the system and test the internet. You may have to reconfigure the router settings based on your setup.

Follow with Eset scan:
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus Scanner HERE

• Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
• Click Start
• When asked, allow the Active X control to install
• Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
• Click Start
• Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
• Click Scan
• Wait for the scan to finish
• Re-enable your Antivirus software.
• A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

My thought are there is no indication of active malware. Did you do the DNS flush and reset the router?

The three 'things' showing in the Eset logs are in System Volume. This is where the restore points are kept. the malware is not active in the system and could only be a threat if you did a System Restore and chose one of those points.

We have you drop the old restore points. when the system is clean.

Are you getting an Alert screen telling you that a site is fraudulent, has a bad reputation or has malware on it?

And no, the sites it redirects to dont appear malacious.

Run Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

• Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
• If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
• You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
• If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  [o] Scan using the following Anti-Virus database> Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  [o] Scan Options: Scan Archives> Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:
  [o] Select My Computer
• The program will start to scan your system.
• Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

However, I must ask the following: please uninstall LimeWire if you want me to continue.
You should also uninstall the Coupon Printer.

Alright, I uninstalled the programs you asked me to.

The log was too big originally to attach as one, so I split it up into multiples.
It goes in order from log 1, log 2, log 3, log 4, so if you copy and paste into one big document, just remember the correct order.

Hows it coming on locating/removing the redirect virus?

I do not see any entries that would cause a 'redirect'. I'll check the HJT logs for any bad files. I'm going to write one more script for you to run.

Even though it shows zero bytes, were you able to do a right click> delete on c:\windows\Hpabijigokimakig.bin and did you remember to go back and rehide the files?

I will run the hijack prgm tonight, and post the log. I did delete the unknown .bin file, and rehid the other files.

If there is nothing showing a redirect, then what do you think is causing them? Is there a way to get rid of it or do I have to reset my computer?

  1. Please study the RKR web page carefully. Don't use your computer while RKR is scanning.
  
  2. Start RKR> wait about 10 seconds> click Scan.Leave computer untouched until it completes. An idle machine will minimise the possibility of false positive reports caused by changes to the system during the scan. Background processes may still make intermittent changes, but resulting discrepancies tend to be obvious from their registry or file system branch; on a re-scan many may not recur.
  
  3. Save the discrepancy list to text file as needed.
  Using the File->Save dialog, select "My Computer" and work down to a suitable folder. The "My Documents" and "Desktop" buttons point to a System user's folders.
  
  4. Use the search feature in the RKR forums.
  For questionable discrepancies, search using a distinctive part of the registry key or path name. Very frequently the same item has appeared before and been commented upon. Often they turn out to be innocuous.
  
  5. Search Google.
  Googling a distinctive part of the registry key, especially the CLSID, can often lead to forum reports of the application responsible. Similarly, googling file names may lead to removal advice if malicious. If using long strings copied from posts, ensure that no extra blanks have become embedded in the search string.
  
  6. When posting a log, ATTACH either the full text log or a representative subsection if it's too large.

I think 3 weeks is a long time to look for something causing a 'redirect.'! I've handled everything that was found. Give me the URL for one of the 'redirects'.
