PC version of Doom will have lots of advanced rendering options, no framerate cap

With a closed and open beta of Doom under its belt, Bethesda and id Software collected a wealth of useful information that it says will be put to good use.

id Software CTO Robert Duffy said in a blog post earlier today that several key features were left out of the PC version during the betas for various development reasons. That said, he wanted to clarify that the framerate on the PC version will not be capped.

Better yet, Duffy said Doom for the PC will ship with support for ultra-wide 21:9 monitors and an extensive set of advanced game and rendering options that’ll allow players to dial in the experience based on their desires and hardware capabilities.

The current list of advanced PC settings is as follows:

  • Manually Lock Framerate (un-locked by default)
  • Lights Quality
  • Chromatic Aberration Toggle
  • Shading Quality
  • Post Process Quality
  • Particles Quality
  • Game F/X Quality
  • Decal Quality
  • Directional Occlusion
  • Reflections Quality
  • Depth of Field Toggle
  • Decal / Texture Filtering
  • Motion Blur Quality / Toggle
  • Sharpening Amount
  • Lens Flare Toggle
  • Lens Dirt Toggle
  • Texture Atlas Size
  • Show Performance Metrics
  • Resolution Scaling
  • UI Opacity
  • Film Grain
  • Rendering Mode
  • FOV Slider
  • Simple Reticle
  • Show First-person Hands Toggle
  • Use Compute Shaders
  • Vsync (support or triple buffering)

Duffy added that in the coming weeks, they’ll be providing an inside look at the idTech 6 engine architecture, the rendering pipeline, customization technology and other initiatives they’re working on to broaden the minimum PC specs even further.

Doom fittingly lands on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Friday, May 13.

Thumbs-up for same day release on all platforms as well as giving high-end PC players all the headroom they could want. Here's hoping New Doom (Noom?) is more than just gfx..the original had some pretty neat level design and gameplay that could be deadly, gritty and sometime hilarious in multiplayer.

This is good news for PC gamers, however I really didn't care for the game. I enjoyed games that played this way when I was growing up, but I just prefer different types of shooters these days. I'm more of a tactical player than a run and gun jump all over the place player these days. The beta looked good and played well, especially for a beta. I just don't care for it.

The beta was definitely a big let down for me. At worst I was expecting Doom-look with updated Q3A multiplayer gameplay. Instead it was just uninspired meh.

I thought it was great fun! I had a blast playing the BETA, brought back that old Quake nostalgia to me anyway, I LOVED IT!
