Popular media streaming app Plex has announced that it is coming to Microsoft's Xbox One and Xbox 360 gaming consoles. Plex will be available for download on the former starting today, making it the first game console the app has ever run on, and will soon be available on the latter.

The new app will allow you to stream movies and shows from the cloud, local server, or wherever you store your content, to your TV, with support for photos and music coming soon. It'll also feature voice and gesture controls via Kinect.

Design-wise, the Plex app for Xbox One will feature a landscape interface, which according to Plex co-founder and Chief Product Officer Scott Olechowski, is due to design requirements set out by the Xbox team.

“[Xbox] certainly kind of encouraged this landscape type scrolling, but the more we used this the more we realized how well it works,” Olechowski said. “You’ll see this approach taken in other places. The more we used it, the more we realized it’s more natural. We kind of fell in love with aspects of it, [and] over time we want to have a more consistent experience”.

Plex Pass members will get the app for free, while others will be able to purchase it with a one-time fee after the Plex Pass preview period. Prior to downloading the app, you’ll need to install the latest Plex Pass preview release of the server (v0.9.10.3), which is available for download on the company's website. Microsoft has said that the app will be available in all Xbox One markets except China and Hong Kong.

Plex, which is a fork of a media streaming application called XBMC, can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, as well as on some NAS boxes, and can stream data to Android, iOS, Windows Phone 8, and Windows 8.1 devices, as well as to Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV, and more.

And they think this will bolster their flagging fortunes. Game consoles are bought primarily for gaming and thats what they need to get right 1st time, that and price. The other crap that it can do or is supposed do is just window dressing and of very limited value to the person who bought the console for it's primary purpose.
All the other garbage they stuff on it just ends up costing the unwary consumer more on an already overpriced console.

Right... and that's why consoles are the most used devices for streaming (in the US)?

Sure you may buy a console for gaming only, but I bought my PS3 so I could have a blu-ray player that also could stream my media from my home network. If I'm going to game I'll just go play something on my PC cause that's where it's done best.

True. But the US is not the only country in the world although I've met one or two Americans who don't know any better.
A few years ago while visiting Dallas I was asked by some bimbo where I was from (because of my accent I suppose) and I replied South Africa, she asked me "where's that, Europe?"
True story.

Haha! Doesn't surprise me considering you were in the southern part of the states. I was recently visiting Atlanta and was asked if it was cold up in Canada yet, but I'm from Minnesota.
