Pokémon Go, Nintendo's hotly anticipated augmented reality game, has just launched

  1. Nintendo's highly anticipated augmented reality game Pokémon Go is now available on Android and iOS as a free download. The game was available to select users for the past couple of months in a closed beta, but now the title is available to everyone.

Pokémon Go allows players to hunt and capture Pokémon in real world environments, and then battle them in Pokémon Gyms. Players have to be phsyically within 100 feet of any Pokémon or Gym to interact with them, so like popular AR game Ingress, players have to explore their local area on foot to play this game.

There are some clever elements to Pokémon Go. To find water-based Pokémon, for example, you'll need to head towards rivers or lakes. Pokémon Gyms are largely found in public parks or churches, while PokéStops, places where you can find free items, are located at local landmarks.

It's taken Nintendo a while to realize the potential audience of mobile games, but Pokémon Go has all the hallmarks of a great, addictive multiplayer game. Nintendo has opted to make this game free, supported by in-app purchases and an optional $35 Pokémon Go Plus accessory, however most users won't have to spend a cent to enjoy the game.

Android users can download Pokémon Go now through the Google Play Store here, while iOS users should head into the App Store via this link.

Update: Some users are reporting that Pokémon Go is not yet available in the United States, although developer Niantic expects the game to go live in this region shortly. Players in Australia and New Zealand can download and play the game already.

Just checked the Play store on my Android device for this game but it isn't showing up. Anyone experiencing the same or have a fix for this?

That sounds really cool. It reminds me of those barcode monster collectors back in the day, only with modern tech being much better.

Sounds cool and is a great concept, but if I'm going outside, it's not to play video games.

Guys, AndroidPolice has mirrored the APK . I can confirm it works even if it is not available in your country. (Greece here and not available according to playstore)
  10. Exactly - but I guess for those who would otherwise sit at home, this is great!

Corrected your phrase, and yes, why oh why, no news about it but my initial thoughts go against collapsing the authentication servers on a massive scale launch =P
