Popcorn Time allows you to stream torrent movies for free

"downloaded in a secret folder somewhere on your drive"

False... It's open source. I could see what the code is doing to find where it is on my drive. Alternatively, I could monitor my drive to see where files are being written/read from.

Even so, I feel like the bittorrent apps out there make it easy enough already. Most come with search bars that will find things for you, not to mention the myriad of well-known torrent hosting sites available and more pirates/teams "branding" their torrents and setting up their own shops to try and beat out others (I.e., YIFY for blu-ray movies that will come out about 3-6 weeks before Bluray in stores).

Also, on my internet it's about 20 min on average to get a 5 gb movie (5.1, 1080P, with extras). I think I'll live with that rather than have additional software.

Either way, cool app concept that hopefully more people will take notice of in this "on demand/always on" society, but as others have noted above... the legal teams will be foaming at the mouths on this one for a while.
Why is it that these comments always turn to "my **** is bigger". We don't care about your internet speed, we want info on how the program works.

Why do you care that he has a faster connection than you?

In a world where people complain about the things they illegally download...

Streaming is the solution to this problem but yet they fight companies like Netflix tooth and nail. The tighter these companies hold their intellectual property in their fists the more movies will slip through their slimy little fingers. Most of what Hollywood makes today is crap anyways.

Ah, at last! It just wouldn't be a torrent thread without someone advancing a condemnation of Hollywood's greed and poor quality product..

You forgot, "it's not worth paying for, that's why it gets stolen".

You got that right!

Though I do believe streaming is a solution, netflix like, but comming out of the same tv providers as cable, with the only difference you get it through internet (If you like) thus reducing their need for big infrastructure for cable companies and prices, letting you see what you want when you want it, of course the same as through tv with advertisement and if you wish to remove those maybe a small premium fee? Who knows but I would love to see my shows, supporting the creators, hoping not another firefly incident :p

So since this is open source and all the code is there, why can't the nice folks at RIAA modify it to identify where pirated copies are coming from and use that to whack folks? Check the article, "Also, since this is essentially a torrent client, you aren't just leeching but sharing as well." It seems to me that everyone who uses this and engages in 'sharing', runs a risk of becoming a 'whackee'. This wonderful program makes it possible for the relatively clueless to set themselves up as targets.

I would love to try a strictly legal version, but will stick with Hulu / Cracker / Netflix and the Internet Archive for now.

Well... those are actually legal versions that do the same but the seeding part :p
True, they deliver the "seed' while paying for the rights to do so. The issue is that Popcorn makes the user complicit in the distribution of material which he does not have the right to do so. Hosting a pirated copy of anything (or even just a part of that) just seems unwise to me. I think I would like to avoid that.
