Ram for Acer aspire

So i have an acer aspire 3000 with the stock 256mb ram and im looking to upgrade it to 1gb
my problem is that the manual gives the maximum memory module size as 512mb in ech of the two slots while two ram choosers on the kingston and corsair websites have told me that i can use 1gb modules
I would like to know if i can actually use 1gb modules as it is simpler and i can upgrade again in the future (and if this is possible can i out both the old 256mb module and new 1gb modules in together to give 1280 mb)
thanks

That should work , using the 1gb and 256 sticks, but it might not run at the full ddr333 mhz speed. the reason it might not be posted like that on acer's website is because they "do not recommend it" for the reason i stated before.
