Something to look forward to: This week, a modding group released the 1.0 version of its project that replaces the textures in Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 with higher resolution versions and adds other visual tweaks. It is the culmination of eight years of work and has been praised for its faithfulness to the original art.

Since 2014, two modders have been working to retexture the entirety of Capcom’s influential 2005 third-person survival horror shooter, Resident Evil 4. While playable versions of the HD texture mod have been released before, Cris and Albert have just released the first fully complete version.

Capcom originally designed Resident Evil 4 for old CRT televisions in standard definition. While Capcom’s re-releases for PC and modern consoles can render the game in HD and 4K, the company has done relatively little to upgrade the original low-resolution textures.

They found some of the original real-world sources for many other Resident Evil 4 textures and re-implemented them in high resolution, which was not easy. Some required traveling across Spain and Wales to acquire the asset. Those they couldn't find had to be redrawn.

In the end, Cris and Albert's mod replaces every texture with assets 8-16 times their original resolution, including those for the DLC, like The Mercenaries, Assignment Ada, and Separate Ways. They also made subtle improvements to the lighting and some 3D models to restore missing lighting effects from the original GameCube version.

The mod is compatible with the Steam version of Resident Evil 4 (versions 1.0.6 and 1.1), though unfortunately not Capcom’s recent VR version. The download page has instructions for both manual and automatic installation of the 38GB mod.

Playing through Resident Evil 8 right know makes me think maybe it would be just best to have a remake of the fourth, since I haven't personally played it. The eighth one has taken a dive in quality from RE2 Remake - it's very linear, casual and even more story focused than the seventh (which was good and had a nice balance). Of course they can and will create great new sequels, but the eighth is just that disappointing in comparison, so I wish we will get a certain good modern RE title next time (if fans of RE4 are to be trusted).

Am I the only one here that tries to play most of the series but just loses interest being 1/4 or 1/2 in then doesn't ever touch it or uninstalls it? When I was a kid I didn't have this issue.

Maybe it's because of adult ADHD or whatever that term is? (will Techspot erase this comment because it has a few capital letters again?) Don't get me wrong I love the atmosphere of the series maybe it's because I'm playing it on PC and get sidetracked by visiting tech sites and youtube etc...

Watching that trailer brings back good memories of playing the game on PS2 back when it came out, but like most remakes/remasters, it just won't be the same trying to play it all over again, also I'll never find the time.

I feel like if they took the gameplay from re6 and went back to being scary/suspenseful they'd make a killer title.

re6 went a bit too hard on the ideas but the mechanics were pretty much the apex of RE imo

You are definitely not the only one. I'm 46 now and I've been playing games since the Vic20/Coleco Vision days and I'd say the last 10 years have been rough. I've bought over 50 games but keep playing the same ones (Overwatch these days).
Played RE2 and having a hard time with RE3. Very monotonous. Gonna try finishing RE7 Biohazard. That was more interesting.

"Enjoy Resident Evil 4 like it's your first time."

Well in my case, it truly would be. Even as an avid fan of the series, I still missed this one.
