if i change to root i disable my network device and i unplug the cord. after i get back on other user, i try to active the network device but it doesn't do it, i also tried going into services and restarting the network service, but still my computer don't grab an ip address. is there another service i need to restart also? if i reboot it works fine, i'm trying to skip the rebooting part.

i don't know, i'm really crazy about security, and specially when i'm new to linux. i read to not log into root while connected to the internet.

but for the question, i found out that i need to be on root for it to get an ip and all the good stuff :)

What operating system are we talking about here?

Ok, you replied..

In linux you can set almost anything you want to be doable by a normal user too but it is much more secure to just switch to root when you need to do something special.
