Roxio becomes Napster

  1. Roxio plans to change its name to Napster, and concentrate on selling music on-line, selling off its CD and DVD writing software division to Sonic Solutions.

As you may recall, Roxio resurrected the Napster name and used it as a platform for its paid music downloads. Napster was, many moons ago, the first major P2P file sharing system that gave rise to Kazaa and the like. Roxio plans to introduce its legal, paid service first to students, who were the original main audience for Napster back in its first days.

Will Easy CD and DVD Creator still be released under the Roxio name? Sonic said it would continue the Roxio brands and retain most of the software unit's employees.
  2. Fools, that was really stupid. Me predicts they will be bankrupt this time next year. This online music fad isn't going to carry them forever, and besides the Napster name just brings to mind rotting corpses. iTunes will destroy them. Serves them right for gobbling up MGI though; I still haven't forgiven them for that.

It was certainly not news I was glad to hear, anyway.
