sata2 problems

  1. A friend of mine just built a system with KN8 Ultra MB and a sata2 Maxtor HD. It booted right from the start and loaded Windows xp. The next morning it wouldn't boot at all. After trying several things he changed the jumper on the HD from sata2 to sata 1 and it works fine.

What is the problem? Are there special cables you need for sata2? Will the latest drivers and bioses fix the problem? thanks

come to find out that maxtor offers a fix for this problem. They said they would email it to him and he never heard back so he is going to call again.

They are relunctant to give it out since it can ruin the drive especially if it is the wrong one. So you have to tell them exactly what you have before they will send you the fix!

Well, they sent the needed files. Once he figured out how to change file extentions in XP, he ran it and now he is running in Sata2 and says it is great!

As far as I know it was a fix for the HD. I think it was a firmware fix.
