Screen locks up with sound distortion/sutter

I will be playing a game (only time it has happened so far) and the screen locks up. I am still able to move around the cursor but everything is frozen and the sounds has this weird distortion/stuttering effect. I've updated my video card drivers to see if that's it, but no. Any ideas?

It could be your video card going bad... My computer does the same thing. I am going to replace the GeForce 9600GT soon

I really hope not :S, I just built this computer and am using a new 580.
