What just happened? It seems like it took forever but Sony finally revealed pricing and the release date for the PlayStation 5. The standard console will go for $499, and the Digital Edition will cost $399. Both consoles launch on November 12 in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. Prospective buyers in the UK and the rest of the world will have to wait an extra week until November 19.

Unsurprisingly, Sony has opted to price its console to match the Xbox Series X. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is $100 more than Microsoft's entry-level Xbox Series S. However as far as we know, Sony's base PS5 model is identical to the standard minus the optical drive. The same cannot be said for the Series S, which has weaker specs than the Series X.

Microsoft is getting a slight head start on sales with its November 10 release date, but Sony has put itself in a comfortable competitive position, in both timing and price.

To add to the value, Sony also had a surprise announcement for PlayStation Plus users. Not only will the PS5 be backward compatible, but Plus subscribers will get immediate access to a backlog of PlayStation 4 titles free of charge.

The new perk, called the PlayStation Plus Collection, appears to only apply to PS5 owners. It features several AAA PS4 titles, including God of War, Bloodborne, The Last of Us Remastered, Final Fantasy XV, Fallout 4, Mortal Kombat X, Uncharted 4, Resident Evil Biohazard, Days Gone, Until Dawn, Detroit Become Human, and more.

Sony didn't say more about it, but it does appear to be something that it might roll games into and out of as time goes by. It's a nice perk and a clever marketing ploy that Sony hopes will give it an edge in driving next-gen console sales.

Finally, with less than 2 months till launch...

I'm sure Microsoft is hating Sony right now. We all know Sony wanted this console to cost more money. But the fact that Microsoft threw the prices out first, they needed to compete. And compete they did. I think Sony will win this generation war again.

The cheaper version of the Xbox shouldn't even be considered next gen since it doesn't even support 4k...

The cheaper one makes a lot of sense. A lot of families and especially kids will not be able to afford the X. The S gives them a still capable machine that allows them to play the same games as richer friends, but with slightly less flashy effects. Hopefully the architecture is set up so that this machine doesn't hold back the X though.

OK, one question. Everywhere everybody say 4K is the thing, but how many of those have the 4K TVs to use it actually ...

In Xbox deffence, if you do not stand and start looking closley for difference, on a 40' TV or close, you will not see difference in 1440p or 4K. You just brag about it :)

I am a PC gamer so I am not a customer of consoles, but just saying. Simmilar things go for PC monitors thought but a different topic :)

Have sony said if it will support 1440p? only ask because the pro only supported 1080p and 2160p

Well, it says :

Video output formats HDMI: 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 4K UHD, 8K UHD

Also, in some places they addvertise as "up to 4K", but if you ask me they will not. There are no TVs with 1440p. They jumped from 1080p to 4K.

This indeed wonders how Xbox S will scale. If they count on the TVs to do that some are not good at that and people might have bad experinece. Interesting topic.

Seems all pre-orders got taken up overnight here in the UK. Can't pre-order anywhere now...

The digital version for $399 is a killer deal...

The Series S Is dead before release, I wanted one until I realized it was less powerful than my xbox one x.

Less powerful (in terms of actual performance) how ?

Really everything about it is better and even the GPU‘s actual performance is higher (in spite of the tflop number) , never mind the added features.

Just preordered a 3080, going to pass on this until a Pro version or more games come out.

Likewise, but not getting the 3080. Looking to overhaul for DDR5 generation of CPUs/GPUs. I haven't had a console since PS2 days. Are we expecting the PRO version to have UHD 120p in most titles? How long after do they usually release?

I hope they do, I don't own a tv and was going to use my monitor.

At first. I thought series x could be a better offer.
From Sony point of view, their offer is actually very witty.
People will think this way:
The console is a great machine, and the disk itself does have the bigger part of the value.

So they make people think of the proposition, add, subtract and understand the end result.
The CPU/GPU itself has more value than they ask for it. It does not matter if xbox series x might be slightly more ahead with frame rates, if all the machines are state of the art technology and a step forward for all consumers

Why? You can get a Series X for $35/month and it comes with GamePass Ultimate. $25/month for the Series S. Both are really good deals.
Apparently, you haven't been taught any math.... Oh boy, let's pay $25 a month for 2 years for something that costs $300 normally.... wait... 25x24 = $600!!!

You think paying double is a good deal since it's "over 2 years"???

This is why so many people are in debt...

It's not just for the console. You get Game Pass Ultimate, which lets you play pretty much every game on the platform. If you buy two new games for the PS5 or three for the PS5D, which now will cost $70, you're already over $600. So $25 a month including Game Pass is still the MUCH better deal, especially if you play a lot of games.

The console as a 512GB SSD which once formatted is probably 400GB so it can hold about 3 games, if you don't have a super speedy internet connection so you can download games fast, the subscription is kinda wasted.
Looks like Argos are releasing their pre-orders tomorrow (Friday) so you could try them (UK).
Thanks for the tip!

The series S will play backwards compatible games in vanilla Xbox one resolution (720-1080) vs the series X can do 4k enhanced games along with my one X.

I think it does come down to Tflops, why else would they not be able to up-convert all the games like an xbox one X does?

The PS5D can hold 5-6 games by that argument. Not much better, is it? In any case...;

Games will be a lot smaller than you expect.
You can connect any HDD through USB, store your games on there and transfer them to the SSD when you're going to play them.
You can download games over night. No need for super speedy internet connection. With a 2MB/s connection you'd take 7 hours to download a 50GB game.
Games can download in the background while you play something else.
You can expand the storage with a 1TB or 2TB expansion card.

Who plays more than 2 or 3 games at the same time anyway?

People really love slamming the Xbox...

That's feasible, I'm willing to wait to see.
