Sony is purging some TV shows from users' libraries, including purchased content

I bet if these media conglomerates on their streaming services started offering DRM free unmolested mp4 digital downloads and sell their movies and shows at a reasonable price, people would buy that up. For instance a recent Sony movie, The Equalizer 3... $12.99 for DRM free MP4, yes I would buy that and keep it on my NAS. I might copy it to my laptop to watch it when I'm on a flight. I can make a backup copy and not worry about losing access to it. Yes, I would pay for that. Would you?

In theory it should be cheaper for them to sell DRM free files of their movies and TV shows than hosting a streaming service, but most customers will only need to download it once. Where streamers will often watch the same video two or even more times. That is a lot of bandwidth being wasted.
They likely would never go that route. They've been making it more difficult to even get MP3s of music, with many newer tracks requiring you to hunt across platforms to find a copy that isn't streaming only.

The tech world has always had a huge population of snot-nosed know-it-alls, so I can't help but wonder how many people that are losing, or will lose, digital content, are the ones that snubbed their nose about the dangers and warnings of paying money for something you can't even touch.

I certainly never did... I enjoy the convenience of it all being available with these streaming services, but I have always wished they would let us download a copy to keep without being d*cks about it. I know that will probably never happen though, greed drives this world unfortunately. Now I have been downloading and keeping stuff I like to watch for years and years now, but most of it I bought as well because I like to support it and see more of it. Though when I was in school and poor, I certainly didn't.

All this licensing crap with online content is bloody annoying though. I remember for many many years BBC wouldn't bring Top Gear to America because they claimed some issues with the music being licensed differently that wouldn't allow it. For a while they did bring it to America but changed the music from the original, so it usually didn't 'fit' the scene. Then you have the same crap in video games, like Rockstar who removed some music from GTA 4 because of licensing crap. Frankly this ruins the original and intended "art" in our entertainment, and I think it should be banned. Any removal or alteration of original content should be illegal. Just stupid greedy crap.
