Start Menu and Desktop Icons missing

Hi there..

I'm new here... i've got this problem with one of my PC's, it has a windows XP OS, It hanged up, so i rebooted it, but then after being prompted for user and password, only the wallpaper shows up.. I can only run and access folders using Ctrl+Alt+Del funtion. I already runned HJT. here's the Logs... I also have a problem with the smss.exe being detected as a virus...

pls. help me out... thanks

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Very Important: Before deciding whether you should clean or reformat your system, go and read this thread HERE and decide what it is you want to do.

If after reading the above, you wish to clean your system, do the following.

Go and read the Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions. Follow all the instructions exactly.

Post fresh HJT, AVG Antispyware and Combofix logs as Attachments into this thread, only after doing the above.

Also, let me know the results of the Panda Antirootkit scan.

I've lost the desktop icons and taskbar. Will appear sometimes but then disappear.
Same problem in safe mode. Have tried running explorer.exe from the task manager but that didn't help. Also ran sfc /scannow, still need help.

All fine and good, Hopkinso, but AVG Spyware is no longer available for new users, and expires for old users on May 31, midnight.
