Steam introduces feature to combat Borderlands review bombings, Gearbox CEO responds to...

No, it isn't cheaper

https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/

Still $60 to pre-order. Mind you the EPIC store doesn't even have pre-loading, let alone reviews. It's missing a ton of features that steam provides.

See the link above. We are not getting cheaper games. Borderlands 3 was done before the platform was chosen, so you aren't reaping any "better game" benefits from this. They are pocketing the money plain and simple.

Yea I don't get why some people are so misguided to think they are getting a cut of the deal the developers are getting.

As of now, the consumers are getting boned to migrate to a shittier platform.

What consumers want no longer matters to any business and instead they will always push to get he most while giving the least.

When a game is on multi platforms, most forget that pc does not make the most profits like it once did. Console is where the money is made at and relied on when multi platform games are concerned. The fact that it's even on pc is basically a bonus. At least that's how it seems sales wise these days.

I am no fan of Borderlands at all but if it gets the hype, it'll do well despite the loss of Steam. As one poster said, all you have to do is wait 6 months, it'll be on Steam and likely on sale. If it's not on sale, there will be sales to follow very soon.

Some of you are forgetting that Borderlands 3 is not a PC-only game. I think the sales will do fine. This is something that is a minor inconvenience. They will be getting 88% rather than 65%. I can't blame them at all for making this decision.

PC is by far the biggest platform. Steam alone has significantly more users then either PS Online Or Xbox Live. Not counting the numerous other online games like WoW and other game launchers.

PS4 alone sold almost 100 million units until last December. Every multi platform AAA game sells more on PS4 than on any other Platform. Even witcher 3, wich was a big hit on PC, still sold more on Console: https://www.dualshockers.com/witcher-sales-ps4-xbox-one-pc/

I see almost every AAA multi platform game "dead" on Steam Stats. There are few exceptions. Looking at top 30 played games on Steam, it is hard to find AAA multiplatform games. F1 is empty, PES is empty, Street Fighter is empty, Tekken is empty, Mortal Kombat is empty, etc etc

Idk what makes you think Borderlands would have more sells on PC than console, but let me get this straight: It won´t, just like no multiplatform game does.

Now, if you want to talk how PC is the biggest market? Maybe, because it has titles like League of Legends, Dota, Heartstone, WoW and other e-sports titles that are played by millions of people. Also while everyone in 2019 has a PC for daily workflow, not everyone has a dedicated gaming system (console). People with PCs to do their daily stuff, also play games sometimes. FML even my mom has steam installed to play some random puzzle game she loves.

But remember PS4 has 100 million users too. And the 3rd party multiplatform games are defo most played on console, not PC.

I don't think that is true. Console games in general have a way larger audience and revenue compared to PC. But if you have any sources that say otherwise, I'd love to use it to smear it on console plebs.

"Console plebs" is a dumb thing. I play both PC and console since a kid and didn´t get any disease by doing it. Some games shine better on PC, other games shine better on a console, just deal with it. there is no "1 trick do it all" system. Never was.

Plus it actually cost less to purchase games via Epic, right? So what's the big deal? Not everyone is made of money, I'll take any saving I can find while supporting the developer. Clearly Valve doesn't care otherwise they would jump on the bandwagon and match their prices yet they stick to their guns... I wonder what are they betting on..?

Pandy Bitchford just insured that Borderlands 3 will fail to come anywhere near sales projections. Notice how he not only singles out Steam as if their the only platform vulnerable to ratings manipulation but also completely ignores the steps they've taken to fix the process. Oh, riiiight - Valve made the off-topic review filter *OPTIONAL*, which isn't what Bitchford wanted. LOL, I never liked Boringlands anyway.

Those tweets came out well before Valve implemented the filter. Not seeing anyone mention that, or the response Valve gave to the site who asked for comment and only got one juuuust before closing shop for the day.

And, if you could read, you'd see that Randy mentioned Gearbox Publishing. That's all those games thst were announced BEFORE BL3. See, 2K is the publisher and made the decision for BL3 to go on EGS. All the Gearbox Publishing games are/were headed to Steam.

This is clearly beyond you're ability to understand, but that would be a move to protect their third party developers from *****s like you. See, the publisher in charge of this decision is 2K. Would you like to guess the publisher in charge of the other games making the exclusivity deal? I'll give you a hint; starts with a 2 and ends with a K.

You want to make a statement, GO AFTER THE COMPANY RESPONSIBLE! Go after NBA 2K, FIFA, et al. Because what you're doing only means that 2K gets away w/o paying the incentive bonuses to Gearbox that they have earned. You're literally helping the guys you are upset with. Smdh

Kind of hard not to implicate gearbox in this when their head boss is seen shitting on steam in a tweet. Perhaps he should learn to think before talking. Ironically he is criticizing steam for a feature EPIC doesn't even have and a feature steam has actively been improving. There's no excuse for not contacting steam first to see if their side of the story. Someone in his position should know this. Right now all I see is a BS reason to justify the cash grab.
Not to mention they say they'll do one thing with your data, and then use it in more ways than you would've permissed. I.e. The import steam friends functionality that lit a fire under them.

I'm amazed more people don't raise hell about that. Who knows what else they could do.

Personally, for that reason alone I will not use Epic Launcher or directly support it. My trust was broken. Randy needs to get off the joy pills.

With very few exceptions (like internally developed Valve games, for example), Steam "exclusives" are not due to Steam's aggressive marketing, wheeling and dealing, or other negotiations with game publishers to lure them to an exclusivity agreement. They are choices that the developers and/or publishers made on what service they wanted to catalog their game for their customers. There is a huge difference between the 2 situations.

There is no difference. Steam takes 30% and has exclusives, wich they pay to make them exclusives. But you guys accept that with no issues, yet a differenr store does the same and is the end of the world.

Hypocrisy, sorry.

It's not hypocritical, the Epic store sucks and they are the one's promoting exclusivity. Steam has been the top champ because they don't do exclusives, they are literally just the only storefront that was available to host the game. You can get 90% of Steam games on GOG.

Other publishers have said, hey let's make launchers for our games, but we'll also publish on Steam (Some devs).

Epic comes along with their garbage malware launcher and exclusive publishing rights, basically sideballing Steam and making it sound like Steam is the bad guy.

**** the Epic store, I refuse to buy any games from them, and if you do you're only supporting this type of game exclusivity.

You think steam doesnt use telemetry aswell? In what world do you live?

And gog has 90% of steam titles? Just... No... Shadow of the tomb raider, pes, mortal kombat, f1, sekiro, etc etc etc

I never liked stores, apart from gog wich lets me play the games without drm or logging in on their software. A game being exclusive on epic or origin isnt any different from being a steam exclusive to me.

I'm unable to find anything that states Valve/Steam pay for exclusivity rights for 3rd party games. Epic does, and they do it even after other stores have been accepting payments from customers.

The only thing I could find:
http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2016/06/17/...ers-to-stop-them-taking-exclusivity-contracts
Granted I only looked for 10min.

And Valve apparently has a "VR Fund" for VR development. To my knowledge though that coop doesn't lock developers into making exclusive content for the platform.

Unless you can find a source for Valve paying for exclusivity rights, then there's no hypocrisy. If you can, I'd definitely read it.

Again, you are confusing single platform availability with negotiated platform exclusivity. Games are typically only available on Steam because the publishers or developers themselves CHOSE to only make them available on Steam, not because Steam enticed them with some lucrative deal to snipe the title from all other platforms. The devs chose Steam because it's the biggest and most reliable platform out there for digital delivery of PC gaming, and often because there is a lot of behind-the-scenes infrastructure and support available for the developers (particularly small dev houses). Most game houses know that putting their title on Steam is making it available to the widest PC gaming audience in the marketplace, which serves both to increase accessibility to their customer base, and to widen their potential sales pool. If the devs want to make the title available on other platforms, they are more than able to do so, it's totally up to how much effort they want to put into distribution on multiple platforms. GoG is a great example of a huge bonus platform to make your games available on, and it's a platform that is consistently growing as it continues to mature. The result is that games are available to a wider audience.

Meanwhile, Epic is ACTIVELY wheeling and dealing with developers and publishers to negotiate exclusives to help bolster their own platform's brand recognition as they try to effectively break into the digital delivery market. Their tactic is to starve out the other platforms and force us as consumers to HAVE to use their new and very limited service, rather than just allowing us to choose which platform we prefer. Why leave it up to healthy competition and entice customers in with the actual quality of your product and services, when you can force them to have to use your platform? It's a major difference in tactics, and if you can't see it, I'm not sure how you'll ever get the blinders off.

Steam is the reason we can no longer buy or sell used PC games... Epic is just doing exactly what steam did and does. Steam has titles that are only available on steam.... Blizzards games are only available on battlenet... Who cares?

I'd like to point out that I was comparing active online members. If you want to compare number of units out in the wild there was 2 billion PCs in use back in 2015 and there certainly is more now. That kind of comparison is only going to make the consoles look worse.

http://www.worldometers.info/computers/

Oh wow a trash Mortal Kombat port is empty? How is that surprising. There are better fighting games on PC. Sorry that the platform doesn't conform to your console standards.

"Idk what makes you think Borderlands would have more sells on PC than console, but let me get this straight: It won´t, just like no multiplatform game does."

The only thing I see is a single person trying to pass their preconceived bias off as fact. That which is submitted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

"But remember PS4 has 100 million users too."

/facepalm

Alright then, if total unit sales equal users then the PC has over 2 billion. By your own logic the PS4 losses.

There is no difference. Steam takes 30% and has exclusives, wich they pay to make them exclusives. But you guys accept that with no issues, yet a differenr store does the same and is the end of the world.

The difference being that steam exclusives are either 1) made by Valve themselves or 2) Devs choose to sell it only on steam with zero financial incentive from Valve. Kind of important. Was BL3 designed by EPIC? No, they switched platforms for $$$, that's it. Valve does not force companies to sign exclusivity deals in exchange for cash. They even go out of their way to help the company's that use their service. BL2's online play was through steam's service for christ sakes. They provide a free place to host your modding community. There are so many examples where Valve has gone out of it's way to advance the PC platform. Yes they take their 30% but they provide far more then any other online marketplace that charges the same rate like Apple and Google.

Don't dare try and make it seem like what EPIC is justified, it's not.

Fair enough, I was thinking about Metro Exodus and the developer who said they will be passing the savings on to the customers and making the game cheaper on Epic. I assumed ppl were pissed after pre-purchasing on Steam and paying more in the process. However even if the game ends up costing the same $60 you're forgetting it means more money for the developer which means they get to make more games we all love so much! So kudos to epic for doing that! Not everyone is as big as EA and can undercut Steam by launching their own platform!

Bawhwha. Remember Alien: Colonial Marines? Remember the huuuuge ef-up?! Remember all the lies, deceit, smokescreen and so on? Gearbox doesn't even have the balls to admit their mistakes and hire their own staff to create games, they just outsource. Remember how EA lied about Battlefield V mictrotransactions? It's easy: VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET. DO NOT pre-order. Do NOT pay any DLC. 60 bucks is more than enough for a game. The price increased from 50 to 60 bucks, and instead of increasing quality, we have now DLC's, mictrotransactions, SJW-infested shovelware, millions poured into bonuses for CEO's and so on. Buy Nintendo: they dont' fire their employees as EA does. Don't buy ANYTHING from Gearbox.

The gearbox randy b*tchford boycott continues.

Colonial Marines. Never forget the bait & switch.

Will celebrate the day they go under.

I like the convenience of my Steam account and access to my games there and most of them located there. I do not care much about exclusivity as much as I care about convenience and price. The fact that all of the "Fallout" titles from Bethesda are available from Steam and not exclusively, then excluding "Fallout 76," kinda bothers me though. All we need is another "Launcher" cluttering up our desktop one after the other, if they all decided to do it this way, what a mess it would make.

2k doesn't realize these decisions are part of why piracy is so big. Let's take greed off the table for a moment and consider users want simple solutions, steam gathered nearly all the games most people wanted in one place and piracy dropped off a few percent. Simply due to the convenience of a single point of purchase.
These percent ticks have gone up recently due to things like always online requirements and exclusive content behind pay walls ie dlc and micro transactions. These have directly caused gamers to find other ways to play the games they want rather than paying for the bad decisions of developers.
That's even ignoring things like day one dlc (looking at you FFXV) preventing gamers from enjoying the game on launch day.
What I see is a ton of gamers waiting 6 months or just pirating B3 because it is simply easier than dealing with a stupid developer decision.
I'll buy a copy but I'm sure I'll be able to play it in the 6 months before I pay.

So much wrong in so little space, wow.

Total units sold is such a meaningless statistic, whyt did you even trot it out ? You know there are way more PCs than PS4s out there right ? So it's not a maybe, it's a fact that PC is the biggest platform out there. It might not be the most lucrative on a per title basis, sure, but in terms of the number of potential customers it is the biggest, period.

Really ? I see a lot of AAA multiplatform games in the top 30 Steam charts so that was just a load of BS on your part. Secondly, as you stated, PC has a number of very popular games not present on consoles like CS GO, LOL, DOTA 2, WOW, Hearthstone etc. that have huge player bases. If you really think some Mortal Kombat game is going to dethrone any of them you clearly are out of touch with reality.

PC also has the biggest number of indie and retro games. Emulators are also a thing. All of that attracts a big number of players. So yeah, with so many options it's not as easy to brake through compared to a much limited catalog of games on say PS4 or (even more so) XONE.

Also let's not forget that fighting games are a niche genre, F1 games even more so. PES, as in Konami ? Really dude ? Go see how bad the game actually is. Just because a game has been published by a big company does not mean it's a good game. Let's also not forget that the quality of a game might wildly differ from one platform to another - see Batman Arkham Knight as the most egregious example.

Is it any surprise then that a half-assed port is doing badly on one platform while it's polished counterpart on another platform is doing just fine ? There are many examples of PC ports being badly done. One of the PES versions (2017 I believe) had been ported from PS3 version even though Konami had a much better PS4/XONE version to work with.

In the end, blindly comparing sales charts and statistics doesn't paint the full picture. AAA multi-platform titles tend to do worse on PC for a wide variety of reasons. Some of them are self-inflicted by devs/publishers and you can't put that on the community itself.

All in all, the PC is a huge platform and a huge chunk of the market. It would seem obvious for devs/pubs to respect that community (as CDPR does and surprise surprise, their sales on PC are good). If they don't, they best prepare for some backlash.

Thete are more PCs than consoled? Lol no wonder, a pc is not only a gaming machine, ofc there are more, but if you want to make a proper gaming comparasion you need to compare steam numbers vs console numbers.

Who are you to say mortal kombat is not that good??? Thats entirely subjective. The point he mentioned is valid and represents facts. Most 3rd party games are empty on PC, wether you consider them good or bad games. Thats subjective. And is not only MK, is basically almost every game that gets released on both pc and console. If you think some crybabies boycotting epic store will hurt borderlands overall success you being delusional. Even one of the Metro devs said that they didnt need PC and they could survive with console only. Even freaking witcher 3 wich not long ago was pc exclusive, completly destroyed pc sales on consoles.

As for steam, and this isnt only for you but also to the other guys, you think when cod was steam exclusive valve didnt pay them?? You think ubisoft puts assassins creed on valve strore because they wanted? Lol how delusional.

Stores with DRM are simply bad, they always were. A game being on epic or steam or origin doesnt change anything. You guys defending steam are pathetic.

This is just the beggining, the trend is : steam with indies and origin, epic, etc etc with their AAA exclusives. You better get used to it.

Is funny you mentioned cdpr because witcher 3 sales on console completly destroyed pc sales. Now imagine what happens with other games.

Also who are you to say pes or any other game is bad?? Thats entirely subjective. His point was that most aaa 3rd party games sell more on console. Thats being objective. Wether you like the games or not.. No one cares.

Also go away with that PCMR mentality, because you basically turned your post into it. Here we are talking about the fact borderlands being epic exclusive wont hurt its overall success, because some random pc steam lovers crybabies wont surprass the game sales on consoles.

No one talked about emulators or league of legends, your speech was useless, leave that to reddit platform wars.

Why people get mad?, developers are gonna get more money, so either we get better games, cheaper games or more variety. Steam is charging 30% of the developers income without adding almost no value to the games. Competition is almost everytime good for the clients.

But that's not the case at all. Yes, Steam charges 30%, which has been the going industry standard rate for about as long as Steam has existed, I believe. In return, publishers have a stable digital delivery system with a giant catalog and massive user base. One that endlessly promotes titles, spotlights new titles, provides early access programs... And has a huge community/forum system, with an entire workshop API dedicated to allowing the communities to share created content if the developer wants to incorporate that system into their code.

It's not that Steam is charging "more for nothing extra" here, even if you'd like to believe that. It's that Epic is charging less for a new platform with far fewer features.
To add a little bit into this, developers create it and then they forget about it and just let the money rush in, they don't have to maintain any infrastructure, nor any digital delivery service, of course they/we have to pay a price for this, but it's just the bread and butter of the game.

I think that Epic store is riding the Fortnite wave and once that is done, there is no amount of "exclusivity" that will make it worthwhile, they are already getting and making more bad rep.

Randy Pitchfork said: "Ironically, that this misuse is possible and that Steam has no interest in correcting this misuse makes me kind of happy about 2k’s decision and makes me want to reconsider Gearbox Publishing’s current posture on the platform."
My reading from that is:
1. He's wrong because Steam clearly are doing something about it with the new optional filter and had previously done something about it by highlighting review bombing.
2. When Epic eventually get around to allowing user reviews, will they be heavily censored with the least favourable ones deleted?
3. He has already decided to go to Epic, who are probably buying him a resort in Barbados, and is just preparing his excuses.
