You connect traditional switches with crossover cables. You can use straight-through with an uplink port or if you have a smart switch that can use both types of cables.
I always used straight through cables ,so take for(assumed)granted thats how they where all setup

the last older microsoft switch I had did have a little switch on the back,I forgot that one
it's just another 'option' personally I try to avoid crossovers to simplifiy my inventory
and avoid using the wrong one {helps if you ensure they're different colors}.
It'll drive you nuts until it dawns upon you that you need the 'other one'.
