System recovery re: Vista SP1 Home 64 Bit

In using the recovery disks I encountered the message "cannot read file source or disk"

Is this recovery set built in or on seperate discs? If on seperate discs, the CD/DVD could be worn out. If the recovery software is on another hard drive partition, that partition could be corrupt... not uncommon
