TechSpot IRC Channel

I don't really look at the irc channel for a help room, its more of just a friendly chat that occationally one of us regulars will have a problem that we may be too lazy to look up and don't feel like posting. People in the room usually have done or have tried to do the same things we are doing with our computers, so if we have a simple problem chances are someone in there knows what to do. The forums are where we (IRC regulars) post if we have a serious problem we dont' know how to fix (see my Internet Problems in WinME post in WindowsOS - nobody fixed that).
The channel is just simplier if I want to drop a line in on Poertner, Papa, Phatman, without taking them away from the ongoing conversation by sending them an AIM message.
If people don't want to sift through the first page in this thread to figure out how to get on, then it doesn't bother me any.
Do you really think having it on a more populated server would actually bring in people to the forums? I don't. Having it on a small server doesn't matter one bit to me - the channel still works the same no matter how big of a server its placed on.
Basically the channel isn't there to solve problems, occationally it is though, its more of a place for people to come and just bulls*** with each other.

ISS, there used to be a lot of traffic there.
Recently though, when I drop in, there is usually no one there except a few static machines. For the past few days, for some unknown reason I've been unable to connect to the boards. I went to the channel hoping someone might shed some light on this but found no one. I did see Veh there once. Luckily the problem has vanished.

you guys have good valid points if you dont see IRC as a tool to build a community. my point is none of us were born computer enthusiats( except for Vehementi whom I suspect is really a computer generated spamming program.....just kiddinig veh) we all started as newbies and having an easier acess chat option is a good way to develop new enthusiats.

Grr....

But if we had a java applet/MSN type deal, than people would just become lazy because they just point, click, select nick, wait, and they're there. IRC offers alot more than just our IRC channel. It's always good to learn something new, and learning how to use IRC can really get you going. Millions of people use it, so think of the content it has. Servers like DalNET and EFNET have thousands of people on at any given moment and hundreds of individual channels - which at least half can offer you real knowledge, tech help, or is a great way to meet friends. I remember going into a Q3 room and I saw 2 of my friends from school in there - but the kicker is they weren't even computer nerds. You'd be surprised what kind of people use IRC - everyone from incredibly knowledgeable tech heads, to pr0n addicts. It's a whole nother world in IRC, and highly worth the knowledge of knowing how to connect to any given server, join a channel and meet people. You can find pretty much anything you want on IRC, be it good or bad.

I'm currently not able to connect to alot of IRC servers since I'm only limited to port 7000 by my ISP, but for the short period of time I could - I mean short - I really enjoyed my stay. The bigger servers have tons of channels in them, hundreds, with thousands of people. It's a whole nother world.

One thing good about this mIRC Techspot channel is that i was forced to learn how to use mIRC, just to get hang around in that channel. I used to be kinda of a anti-mIRC boy.

channel rocks... everyone who browses these boards should be in there.

If only I had decent access from home and spent anytime at home I would be there... but damn client offices and home office don't let me connect to IRC

yeah you might get a java applet that connects through port 80, the http port, through a web browser, that lets you access starchat.net even although any ports that an irc client would use are blocked on a firewall.

you could also investigate making up some reason why you need the access control lists on your firewall changed.

LNCPapa>Could you point me in the direction of one?

While visiting Scotland I tried to find one (java appplet), as the inet café I'd found didnt' have any irc clients... After 30 min I gave it up as a bad idea, and went in search for another café...

I found plenty of applets for accessing certain networks, but couldn't find any which would let me specify which server to join...

Hello Gang!

I¡¦ve never done anything even remotely IRC-related, because all I do is post occasionally in the discussion boards. My only experience with servers is with UT multiplayer. I¡¦d like to frag you all if anybody runs a UT server (my sig). I¡¦m in a LAN, so you can¡¦t access me ƒ¼. It¡¦d be nice to chat with all of you¡Kafter all you guys helped me once, and I returned the favor ;)

K, I was there...now I can see why you'd want to keep this unofficial.
Why do you say that. Here is what happened while you were in the channel:
[16:36] *** running has joined #3dspotlight
[16:37] <running> Bunch of Bots
[16:37] <Nick`Hutch> ;o
[16:38] <running> :(
[16:41] <running> :|
[16:41] <running> :|
[16:41] <running> :p
[17:05] *** running has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving)
[17:06] *** running has joined #3dspotlight
[17:06] *** running has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving)

When are you guys there, anyway? You couldn't host the ASCII file in TS. That's what I meant with keeping it unofficial.

We are there at all different times. Just depends on when you catch us. Most of the time we are at our computers, but not chatting in the channel, usually if we see activity we'll step in and see what's up.

I seem to have a problem; whenever I go on the 3DSpotlight IRC Channel, I get booted by DigitAlex because he seems to think I am a bot. I send messages but nobody seems to reply, or even acknowledge that they have received them; either it is a very inactive channel or something is wrong with the setup of my mIRC. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Look timmoore I don't know where is the problem.

It's true that there is not as much activity as it used to be sometime, but there are always people around.

When I'm online, I always answer and talk when I feel concerned, I mean I don't leave my IRC connected when I'm not home & stuff...

And I sware no one ever heard a word from you in the channel, so it definetely seems to be a problem with you IRC client. You see what we say, but we don't see anything you say. Maybe you should try to install if again or try another one, buddy !

Besides that, the "reboot" thing is only to poke you :D Nodoby has nothing against you !

I reinstalled my IRC client but it's still doing the exact same thing!! It's starting to get a little frustrating now. Any other IRC clients I could use instead of mIRC?

Do you use a firewall or a proxy server? Double check the settings for these.

Try the java chat at www.starchat.net if you can't connect with that one, you have a firewall/proxy problem
