Something to look forward to: Tesla announced a new-look SUV, codenamed 'Juniper,' earlier this month. It is a revamped Model Y that was initially only confirmed for the Chinese and select Asian markets. However, it now appears the vehicle will hit North American and European sectors later this year.

The long-range all-wheel drive variant of the new Model Y has a starting price of $59,990, a whopping 25 percent higher than the $47,990 asking price of the existing model with equivalent trim. However, for the additional money, the new model will include Tesla's supervised full self-driving software, an $8,000 optional extra in the current-generation Model Y.

The new special edition 'Launch Series' variant has a 320-mile range, slightly higher than the current Long Range AWD version, which can go 311 miles on a charge. Tesla claims the new car can add 154 miles of range in just 15 minutes of DC fast charging. It is also significantly quicker than the outgoing model, reaching 0-60 miles per hour in just 4.1 seconds. For reference, the current model does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds.

Tesla posted to X that the new Model Y will offer "maximum efficiency" and "smother rides" compared to its predecessor. It has a redesigned exterior with improved aerodynamics that the company claims will improve range, performance, and longevity. The car also includes upgraded wheels, tires, and brakes, while a newly tweaked suspension offers a smoother ride.

The new Model Y's interior features ambient lighting, ventilated front-row seats, power-folding second-row seats, and a Bluetooth-compatible 8-inch touchscreen for second-row passengers. Other improvements include "invisible speakers" for a minimalist aesthetic and faster cellular + WiFi connectivity. Tesla also notes that the Model Y will offer a "whisper-quiet" ride thanks to acoustic glass, redesigned body castings, and other improvements.

Tesla will start shipping the new Model Y in March across most markets, including the US, countering an earlier announcement that implied the vehicle would only be available in China and other Asian countries. The simultaneous global launch marks a notable change in Tesla's strategy, which has traditionally launched its cars in North America several months after rolling them out in China.

Nissan craftsmanship at BMW prices.
BMW's electric vehicles START at $60k (the i4 sedan). That's not going to have nearly the same cargo space, any driver assistance packages, or additional technology that comes standard on this Model Y. This is also a limited edition model prior to production in the US, and the base Model Y can still be purchased for $46k before incentives. Meanwhile, Nissan's flagship EV crossover starts at $41k and will also run up to $61k... It seems to me that the Model Y is more similar to Nissan's prices lol.

"supervised full self-driving" what does this even mean? sounds like so much 1984 doublespeak
It means you can let the car drive itself, while you sit idly by and evaluate its decisions. The unfortunate side effect of that, is that it's quite boring. Boredom tends to induce sleep. Therefore, you're more apt to fall asleep behind the wheel, unable to determine how the software's decisions are resolving. And the next thing you know...........BANG. (Your insurance rates go sky high, assuming you survive).

At least that's my take. OTOH, if you really want to stay alert, take the motorcycle. A 70 MPH wind in your face tends to focus your attention, decisively.

Not just your own insurance rates. The insurers will raise everyone's rates at least a small amount to cover their overall losses. That's how insurance works.

Typical Techspot article. Completely false. It doesn't "start" at $60k. It is $60k. It is one model called Launch Edition. It's fully loaded with all the options. I paid $60k for my Tesla Performance after I added $8k of options to the $52k base price. After the launch edition, they'll releaese a base model and you can pick and choose which options you want.

Tesla has its own insurance if you don't like your rates from other agencies. It rates your driving and it's as cheap as $50/month is you don't tail gate or drive crazy. It changes month by month based on your driving habits. Your rates are based on you and not others in the area that the insurance agency is covering.

Audi electric is twice the price and you still have to deal with the dealer. Once you get caught in the "luxury" car trap, you'll avoid it unless you really don't mind wasting time and money on constant maintenance.

I tried self driving and it works great. Even the basic autopilot stays in your lane on the highway and accelerates and brakes when needed. It won't change lanes or turn but if you have a long highway drive, it's great to just sit back.

I dealt with plenty of driving purists that swore by a manual transmission. You do you. Don't like technology, then don't use it. No one is forcing anyone to own a certain car.

The newer Corvette automatics are ten speed. It's probably not humanly possible to out think or out shift them.
The only possible reason for owning a standard trannie automobile today, is to show off that you can drive stick. Well that, and you can mindlessly burn lots of rubber with one. That always impresses the hell out of the locals

Stick is also a pretty reliable theft deterrent at this point.

That's generally true. Just don't leave an old stick muscle car out front for too long. If a would be thief can't drive it, he or she will likely find someone who can.
With the cost of pretty much any 60s or 70s muscle car rising to crazy levels, the thieves will turn up with a transporter and load it up for stripping elsewhere.

I have never owned an automatic but have had experience driving them. My opinion has been that automatics are for grandmothers and people who want their hands free for texting and reading their newspaper while driving. We used to call them slushboxes, such was their power-sapping ineficiency. Today's auto boxes waste little power and shift almost unnoticably so there is little if any effect on performance. If I won the lottery and could have my dream '32 custom built, it would have an automatic trans. But I wouldn't have any high tech electrojunk on it.
