Is Apple getting into the original programming game? Maybe. Variety reported yesterday that Apple has indeed had “preliminary conversations” with Hollywood executives about starting to create its own entertainment content. Apple declined to comment on the story.

This idea of Apple taking on Hollywood isn’t new. Since movies and TV shows showed up on iTunes years ago it wasn’t a far leap to think that one day Apple would create its own programming. But according to the report, sources are conflicted. One said that Apple will be hiring people to lead an original programming division in the next few months. Another said that Apple is still in the very beginning stages of this venture, and to not expect anything soon.

One sign that this may be on the horizon is the "unprecedented bid" Apple made for the three stars of the BBC auto show Top Gear earlier this year, although Amazon got them in the end.

If this does happens Apple will be stepping into the ring with the giants of the streaming media world such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. All three of which have their own original content that has found success. Most notably, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.

This next step for Apple, while still not official, makes sense. The questions of what type of content they may create and how it will be available are left up in the air, but in the mean time there’s always Netflix to watch.
