Thinkpad T42 keyboard problem

my laptop keyboard is not working right. first the specs. ibm thinkpad T42, machine type 2378, model R4U, OS xp-pro coa sp2, 512mb ram. my cpu usage jumps up and down between 40 to 100% when running my spy sweeper, fire fox isp and a voice chat program. when i am not running any programs except whats need for the laptop to work the cpu usage is 3 to 10%. and i have available ram. OK now with the problem. when i try to type on the keyboard the letters or numbers don't show up. but if i hold the keys down it will show up there is a delay of about 2 seconds. if i just push down the keys at normal speed it wont show up. it will only show up if i hold it down for about 2 seconds. i thought the keyboard was bad so i bought a new one from the factory. i installed it but it is still doing the same thing. just to let you know every thing else about the computer works great and and all my programs do not have any lag. its only the problem with keyboard delay. i will just add this i have cleaned up the computer, defragged, ran spy ware and anti virus and it has been working fine for years without any problems.

i have and thats not it. i even downloaded keyboard customizer and that did not work. what should i do next . thank you scott

i will check to see what program i don't need for start up and remove them from thank you scott

Most likely cause is simply not enough memory... or the wrong type of memory, or a mix of two types of memory.
The T-42 is a very, very rugged and well moved machine... but it needs 768 MB, 1 gb or even 2 gb for decent performance, depending upon what you are asking it to do.

Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700 with a maximum of 1GB per slot* and you can use PC3200 if all modules are the same type. It becomes a very happy laptop when there is 2 GB found.

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.o.

yes you might be right. it has only 512 mb ram. it has been running just fine and then all of a sudden the keyboard started to have a delay. i am trying other things right now but i may have to buy some more ram. thank you very much. scott

well you were right it was low memory. i installed 2-1 gig sticks and now the keyboard works fine. thank you for your help.and happy holidays scott
